Mounted actions...

Does a rider substitute his movement actions for that of his mounts, or are his actions totally separate?

It sounds like it should be a standard action to direct a mount, but can't locate the rules for it.

Thanks,

"If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a partial melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can't make a full attack."

"With a successful Ride check (DC 5), you can guide your mount with your knees...."

both are PH pg 138

But if a Ride check is a standard action, then you cannot make ANY attacks after you direct your mount?

True, but it doesn't state what type of action is involved, Free, Move equivalent, or Standard.

More and more I'm thinking it's a MEA to direct a mount. This will allow a rider to use the mounts movement instead of their own, but still allow them an attack.

If a skill doesn't say how long it takes to accomplish, what type of action is it?

i think it's a free action

under the ride skill, "Mounting or dismounting is a move-equivalent action." the only other ride check that has a listed action is control mount in battle. and fast mount or dismount is a free action, if you can make a check that high (DC 20)

and fight with warhorse allows a full attack action. if 'directing' or commanding the mount to fight was a MEA, the rider couldn't take a full attack action

Ride would be like the Tumbling skill. It is just used during movement, so the Ride check is essentially just part of movement. You make the ride check to direct the mount, whether it is a full move action, a charge, or even a 5' step.

So, you could make the ride check, move the mount in a normal 5' step, and do your full attack action.

Sorry, being a bit thick headed today.

I just want to be clear on what you can and can't do.

Could a rider use a full attack action if his mount moves more than 5'?

Does it matter whether he's making melee or ranged attacks?

Does it matter if he has a flying mount and it's "gliding"?

no. If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a partial melee attack.

ranged attacks are handled differently: "you can even exercise the full attack action [for ranged attacks] while your mount is moving" AND "you can even take move-equivalent actions normally" (like loading a crossbow)

Does it matter if he has a flying mount and it's "gliding"?
i would say this falls under the 'moves more than 5 feet' rule

Also, don't forget that how fast the mount moves past 5ft you still get that partial action. So your horse can take a full run, albeit losing his dex bonus to AC, but you can then move 200ft and attack!!
