Mountian Giants in MM2

This is a good thing, IMO... now if only they could have some bigger dragons too... The dragons in 3E SHRUNK big time, yet their power was increased... so weird.

1) Its nice to have a big deadly crushing thing without magic gobs. That seems to be rare.

2) Presumeably Titans also have a LOT of magic, so they are likely still more powerful, and they can always be modifed to be taller.

3) It is ridiculous that your average good city walls are as high or higher than most of these giants. Maybe all the giants should be made half-again as large.

4) Mountain Giants don't need to be inserted into a setting just because they have been officially produced. If you want to, they can be put on another continent, in a distant mountain range, or, gulp, the result of modern mythology- the gods, or archmages, don't necessarily need to do all their major acts of creation in the distant past, do they?
For about half of my worlds, the shear number of monsters races is way to high. About half of them might exist as races, the rest exist as solitary beings if they do at all. I like a certain realism to my settings most of the time, and the idea that all these powerful creatures (even lots of CR 3 or 4) roaming around balancing each other strikes me as a condition of ultimate destruction for the region in question.

Either in setting design or in play, Rule 0 anything that remotely bothers you. As far as I am concerned, D&D places the DM as 'in charge' so no one can complain if you have a good reason.

Besides, WHO says there needs to be a whole dang RACE of Mountain Giants?

Couldn't there be just One Big Bad Mythological Mofo? One fortold in Legends as the Biggest, baddest giant who sleeps under the mountain, who moves Rivers and creates Deserts by crushing the land beneath his mighty feet? The Big Grand Daddy of all giants, the First, or the Last, or the one True Giant?

There doesnt' need to be hundreds of 40' tall giants in the mountains gettin' jiggy and getting baby giants and thus thus. C'mon. This is Fantasy. Look into Fantasy roots.

There likely wasn't a whole Race of Grendils, there was likely just 1 of his kind, seeing as his mother looks different. So, surely, there can be different Kinds of monsters. Abberations begit different abberations, instead of hundres of the same.

For instance, the 3E mountain giants have a crush attack where they can jump 20 feet into the air and just squash you like a bug by landing on you. (Ed Stark said that this special attack was originally referred to - at least among the design team - as "the big hairy ass of doom" :D until Skip Williams changed it simply to "crush.")

Now we see the real reason why he was let go....how could you veto the big hairy ass of doom? :)

Am I the only one then who thinks this is really cool.

Nope, I heartily endorse it. The previous "mountain giants" had no real flavor to distinguish them from hill giants. These seem more like it; they've got some real "mountain" in 'em. Nor do I see any serious problem with consistency to previous editions' "mountain giants." They were always a rather obscure monster, all things considered, and it doesn't stop anybody who already has some other interpretation of "mountain giants" from using it.

hmmmm Wonder if they similarly increased the size of Fog Giants, I think they were the biggest giant in 2E. Anyone seen official stats for Fog Giants in 3E?

Fog giants are Huge (24 ft. tall) and found in Monsters of Faerun.

40ft Mountain giants still isn't good enough to handle Cornish giants like Bolster. :D
