If you're a Firefox user than you probably know that a) 4 sucked and was very buggy, and b) 5 just came out a day or two ago, just a few months after 4. 5 is not as different from 4 as 4 was from 3.x. In fact, 5 is essentially a fixed version of 4, which tried to fix itself with 4.1 but failed. So Mozilla turned around and said, "Crap, we better fix this monster. We like the basics of it - it has a much slicker overall look, but is just so damn buggy; why did we release it without fixing those bugs? We're losing people who are going back to 3.x but we want everyone to see how 4 is actually better, it just has some kinks that needed to be worked out." And we got the new and improved Firefox: 5 - what 4 should have been. And so you have it..

Or we could also talk about Windows XP, Vista, and 7, but I don't want to be too obvious.

Hmm....see a pattern here?

For us oldsters there was the same problem with MS-DOS.

MS-DOS 3 went through quite a few iterations and small revisions and then there was the much heralded release of MS-DOS 4! Which went over like a lead balloon. Bloated and full of features the user base didn't want, MS saw most groups sticking with 3.X and went "Crap! What went wrong? Fix it! Fix it now!!!" and MS-DOS 5 was released to generally favourable reviews.

I wasn't trying for an analogy, as it doesn't model the level of change in usability. But if I were I'd say OD&D was qDOS -- the hobbyist program purchased by Microsoft when IBM got cold feet waiting for CP/M-80.

AD&D would be MS-DOS 2.X --> the first major and stable release.

The UNIX O/S world would have its own and entirely separate universe -- sort like D&D and Traveler.

Actually Mozilla adopted a new schedule before Firefox 4. They're aiming for quarterly releases now. Firefox 6 and 7 are also planned for 2011.

Unrelated to much else in this thread, but I did not much like Firefox 4.

Then again, I have Firefox 3 to function like Firefox 2....

The Auld Grump

AuldGrump, as I said in the OP, Firefox 4 sucked, but Firefox 5 is good - it ironed out the bugs in 4 (you can actually scroll down down with PgDn and such, not to mention numerous other things).

Well, yes. Sometimes products have a bad version. I think we're a bit beyond "a few months into 4e" though.

That said, I do think 4e could use a fairly significant revision, if only to clear out a lot of the chaff that's built up. Ironically, it could have used the very 4.5e that the Rouse explicitly ruled out just after release. It's a bit of a shame that Essentials isn't a new version of the game.

Other than that: meh. Lots of people seem to like 4e. While it's not for me, I see no pressing reason to argue it sucks. :)
