Why?

I think the backwards-compatible doesn't mean that everything is equal. It's like ... all TSR-era products are "interoperable." But that doesn't mean that a party should have a B/X Elf, an OD&D fighter, a 1e illusionist, and a 2e kitted ninja.

Just multiclass using all 2024, or all 2014. Don't cross the streams.

And I think that should settle it. In any event, if someone doesn't, and the answer to "Who ya gonna call?" is Sage Advice, then I'm kind of scared to see what they say when asked.

I think this backwards compatible idea is going to get very messy once you start including multiclass as an option.
When they say "it's compatible" the intent is to stop complaints to the contrary. Its not meant to provide actual compatibility. After all, WotCs bottom line needs everyone to switch over to the new rules. They just want people to believe they do so of their own volition rather than feeling pressured into it.

Sage Advice:

Unfortunately, Crossing the Streams targets an object, not a creature, and as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is a creature, it is unaffected by any stream crossing. However, the toilet paper you are wearing will be ignited.

The Stay Puff Marshmallow Man is just one of several kinds of 'edible' construct. It can be eaten as is or eaten as several servings of smores around the campfire between long rests. ;)

Personally, I prefer the Gingerbread Man. ;)
