I am currently running a high-level, no-magic-items game. The players accepted that without a murmur, but they balked when I considered also making it a no-feats game during the design phase. So for my group at least, feats are apparently considered more necessary.

Feats definitely. They add a lot of character to the characters. Substantial differences and are the most fun part of progression (aside from maybe spells).

I’d then pick Multi-classing because it helps people create the character they envision in their head.

Lastly magic items. I’ve played D&D with little or no magic items many times and while fun they don’t speak to the heart of what my character can do in the same way as Multiclassing and Feats. They’re the icing, not the cake.

Magical Items. I can live without feats and just use ability increases. I like having the option to multiclass but can also live without it, I probably more often than not go single classed anyway. Unless it was a very specific campaign, I feel like magical items are part of the allure of DnD. Finding magical weapons and armour, wands and rings, etc. is a big part of the game and I'm not sure it would feel the same without them.

To follow up, there's too many stories involving the discovering of an item that changes the arc of the protagonist. While animal friends are great, a cup that allows you to see Death, a bag that can imprison anything, a sword that can cleave stone, or an arrow that can kill any one man, god, or demon is just too cool.

I think feats are great. I would prefer ditching multiclassing all-together and use feats. I find it a more elegant way to diversify a character's abilities.
