But that doesn't mean that a party should have a B/X Elf, an OD&D fighter, a 1e illusionist, and a 2e kitted ninja.

Just multiclass using all 2024, or all 2014. Don't cross the streams.

I am totally open to having those various characters in a party.

But mixing 2+ of those in a single character? That’s going to be rough.

If you are trying to multi class a 2014 class with a 2024 class (with the exception of the Artificer) then I would say a hard no but 2 2024 classes even if they use 2014 subclasses is compleatly fine.
