I have a slight addendum to this, would you agree?
"Well built MC characters are neither stronger or weaker than single class in this edition."
Basically, I think it's more possible to mess up MC character and be weaker without intending to. If at character level 5 everyone is getting extra attack or 3rd level spells, and not only don't you have your 5th level bump but you don't even have an ASI yet, you'll feel it. I guess it's the opposite of the "sweet spots" you mention - there can be spots where an MC character can feel like they are lagging behind.
Hahaha, imagine the poor Druid 1/Bard 1/Paladin 1/Cleric 1/Ranger 1 at 5th level. Can't wear armor, can barely use weapons, hardly any offensive spells worth casting... about all he can do is Bless other PCs and spam Sacred/Produce Flame with his probably-low Wisdom... Edit: I guess he can Entangle monsters too and pass out Goodberries.
Of course, you can make a single-classed character who's equally bad. E.g. a Charisma 14 5th level half-orc Lore Bard whose only spells known are Animal Friendship, Comprehend Languages, Charm Person, Detect Magic, Identify, Illusory Script, Speak With Animals, and Unseen Servant (plus cantrips True Strike, Mending, and Light).
It might be a fun evening to have everyone make awful 5th level PCs for each other and run them through a regular 5th level adventure. Take a vote at the end of the evening on which PC is the most memorable/entertaining/infamous.
