I'm not willing to give an opinion on multiclassing at least until I see the preview next week. It's one of the things I'm still very tentative about.

giving how much they talk about how ingenious their multiclassing idea was i assume it is great.

Maybe we need time to let it sink in. The most important thing is balance. As much as I would like real mixes, there is following issue:

In 3.5 it made no difference if you are a fighter/wizard or wizard/fighter besides some hp depending on your roll and some free spells. If you mixed rogue and fighter you would be dumb to take fighter first, because you lose 18 skillpoints for ever.

So you have to write the classes or the multiclass rules in a way, that equal looking options be equal in power. But maybe using feats to dip into a class is the cleaner way. And real multiclassing as alternative to a paragon path (which really seems class specific with that new info) also seems like a good solution (broader instead of more focussed)

Two of the features that may ameliorate this are:
:1: Feat re-training. You should be able to switch out "Magic Missile" for "Finger of Death" at higher levels.
That's necessary for the dipping-style multiclassing to work too, isn't it?

:2: Powers vs. Feats. If you have 10 Class Powers and 8 Feats, that means you'll be able to have 10 Fighter Class Powers and 8 Wizard Class Powers (at the cost of all your feats). As long as the number of Powers and Feats you can get are the same an "even mix" should be possible.
This doesn't make me feel any better. I don't want to spend all my feats! And there are things about a class other than its powers that ought to be available.

If you don't want to give up feats, then what do you want to give up in order to multiclass? You can't have it all at no cost, after all.

And there will be ways of picking up class features from other classes, possibly through feats, but definitely through paragon-tier multiclassing.

I wouldn't imagine so, but it would seem cruel to make certain characters concepts feat-deprived, giving them less of... whatever it is you can only do with feats.

Boost stuff you can already do (and buy powers). So, if you're a Fighter that wants to multiclass into Wizard, you're giving up refinement of your Defender role (bonuses to heavy armor, etc) to pick up some Controller powers (AoE spells, battlefield reshaping, etc).

And that's how it should be, because multiclassing shouldn't make you better than other characters, just more versatile.

Frankly, my hopes are that the way to create the most powerful and effective character is to concentrate on aspects of your original class and become the best darn Fighter/Wizard/Whatever you can. I would much prefer multiclassed characters be somewhat underpowered than have the "best" characters be those who used multiclassing to pick the best stuff from each class, buffet style.
