Multiclassing via Feats. Thoughts?

This was posted in the thread about GTS. I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on multiclassing. While feat selection seems like a pretty sound idea, it also seems kinda like a cheap way out to me.

Originally they were talking about having a multiclass write up for each class. It looks like that got canned. I'm not sure exactly how much you'll be able to multiclass a character with just feats, but I have my doubts on this one.

In a lot of ways it makes sense, but I just can't see how a feat can turn my fighter into a fighter/wizard. I'm REALLY against this in concept, though I'll reserve final judgement till I see it.

Why do you think that it got canned?

Isn't a handful of feats morally equivalent to a write-up?

It depends what the feats are, for me. My suspicion is that the first feat grants access to a class ability -- like sneak attack, from rogue -- and maybe a weapon prof, armor prof, skill rank, or similarly defining quality of the class. Maybe also a power, or the ability to take a power from their list, but unless the powers cost more, the feat starts to smell a little too good, to me.

The second and later feats should grant the Defining Class Feature (two weapon fighting or bow?) and a few more powers.

I believe the feats need to grant this access, because otherwise you wouldn't have Important Central Class Features later, multiclass-into-able game mechanics, would assume you had.

I think single-classed characters benefit in that their powers will be either cheaper, higher level, or more plentiful (or some combination of these).

This quote is from some guy who was quickly reading through the book at a convention, considering the Wizards website talks about multiclassing instead of taking a paragon path I'd say that it's still possible there's more to it.

A second level Fighter with skill training:Arcana and Scorching blast once per encounter is good enough for me. Better than 3.x.

I second this. It sounds like a great way of doing it to me.

If it's a feat that says something like "You gain the x class feature/s and can select powers from the Wizard power list as if you were a Wizard of your level minus y" that can be done.

I'm not saying it would be good, i'm waiting for the PHB to come out (or a preview on thw WotC site) to decide, but as for now I think anything would be better than 3E multiclassing system.

According to some post around here (can't search 'cause I won't pay for it) stated that a Multiclassing preview would be up soon, within the next week or so if I remember correctly.

No one listen to Charwoman Gene. Charwoman Gene decide to start using other speech patterns.

:1: Mike Mearls told me not three weeks ago that each class has a table the tells you "you get this much stuff for multiclassing this much into this class".

:2: This was after the PH printing.

:3: Feats are the entry points and "cost" for multi classing. *speculation*

:4: When you gain a class power you can choose from your main class or any classes you have a feat in.

:5: Paragon Path isn't directly related to multiclassing.

:6: Multiclassing Preview 4/30. :area:
