Munchkins: Would this work? (MyTh archer)

Ok, everybody has heard about the Cleric Archer, and how nasty it really is, particularly because he buffs himself up.

The Mystic Theurge is now the new king of the Buff spells.

Would a Mystic Theurge/ Archer work? How's he compare to the Cleric/archer?

Not very well...he has the worst BAB progression. While the buffs definitely help, with reduced duration on many of them you'd have to know when a combat was going to take place so you could spend a minute buffing yourself first.

Now that magic arrows and magic bows do not stack with each other, combined with the duration of spells like Cat's Grace being reduced drastically, the Cleric Archer isn't all that fantastic anymore either. Sure, it is still a sound concept, but no longer the ubber-munchkin tactic it used to be.

The MT could be the greatest archer of all time, if he can prepare. Given the average situation in games and how combats start, I don't think your MT will be all that amazing.

No. It only works on personal range or fixed range spells. So the only two buffs it would help with would be Divine Favor (5th level persistent), Divine Power (8th level persistent). Since both of those are cleric spells and a real cleric archer can pull them off at least three levels before the mystic theurge (not to mention that the theurge needs a good int or cha and consequently will have a worse dex) adding sor/wiz/theurge to the mix makes the character worse rather than better. . . even accounting for Persistent Spell.

Wouldn't the Persistant Spell feat take care of those duration problems?

Persistent Spell isn't core. My DM won't let anybody have it (except paladins and rangers).

With Persistent Spell, the MT can do some damage, but it's tough - until 12th level, you can't use it, and even then you can only make 1st level spells persistent. I wouldn't want to play that character up from 1st level. The 3.0 cleric-archer was pretty playable all the way up.
