Mundane stuff in my rogue's bag of goodies

Never hurts to have a fish hook or two. Useful for snagging light objects, fitting in at a piercing festival, or lowering the wizard's mouse familiar down a well.

Seconded. A couple of fishhooks and a spool of line.

Also carry a small block of wax for taking prints of keys.

Resin for sticking things to other things.

Handkerchief.

Some caltrops.

Noisemaker type fireworks. Small ones.

Anything stinky you can put in a sealable container: skunk oil or gland excretions, rotting flesh (especially if liquified), etc. Very useful for thwarting anything that tracks by scent OR creating a distraction for carrion eaters.

Salt. Not only a seasoning or preservative, its also useful when fighting dirty.

Flour. Not just the basis for most breads, its also flammable, explosively so when dispersed in a cloud (as they found out in Hollywood when making fake fire extinguishers)

Sugar. Trail it from an ant mound near the dungeon opening, then trail it behind you. Get lost- follow the ants out.

Alcohol, esp, spirits of wine. When reduced, you can paint it on surfaces. When lit, this residue will burn. You can make trails or burning marks with this.

Marbles have been mentioned...but I'll just note that most of the early ones were actually made from clay.

Don't know if wax was listed. It can be used as a lubricant and used to waterproof objects or leave messages that are less noticable but can be "felt" with the finger tips.

Animal fat. Can be used to preserve something by sealing it off from air. Also is flammable in an emergency eatable, has an animal sitracting odor.

Bag of marbles.

A towel.

Small peice of touch waterproofed canvas say a foot by a foot square.

Waxed twine at least 25-30 feet long.

Leather strips and straps/thongs.

bag of carbon/soot has lots of uses and nuetralizes some chemicals. also explodes in powder cloud form like flour does.

eventually as you get money upgrade your gear to match your wealth levels. Flexible wire saws made of adamantine as well as crowbars and othe runbreakable metal items. Mithral grapnels etc.

later

Flask of lemon juice, or similar, for "invisible" ink.

A set of small bells with loops that can be hung on thread.

Hollow tube to breathe through when submerging oneself in water to avoid detection.

Warrior Poet

A rock. Maybe fist-sized or half that. You never know when you might want to chuck a rock at something to dislodge it, make a distracting noise, break something, taunt an opponent with a painful incentive, or test a potential pressure-plate or other suspicious spot from a safe distance.

Go-go Dwarf MacGuyver!

Is the rock to get past Beholders? (D&D movie reference )

And then throw it in a trash bin in the first session - for old time's sake. :D

Snort, Yeah that would be funny

BTW- thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am getting closer to my goal - a separate charcter sheet for my backpack.
