Murder is the Pits

Ironwolf enscribes the following obscure drivel on a piece of paper"

"Oh Lady Fair, doth the heart stir passions that burst beyond the bonds of polite behavior? Could love be at the center of all our discord? Who knows what attractions drew lovers past to their doom, and who might say what wonders could not be shared? Favor given to one is a blessing, given to two may spell doom.

I await your reply.

F.L."

Showing it to Vanitri, he asks if he felt able to smuggle it into some of Petra's things. If not, the psicrystal will try to deliver it.

"Petra's things? I think your little crystal is better for that than I, for I'm a bit more conspicious than it is."

Vanitri, done shopping for the night, will circulate to try to learn the general buzz in the pens about the matches (any of them, not just his), the day, and any other floating rumors.

You next see Petra early the next morning, when she delivers a set of 8 rings which were given to her at the opening of the offices. "Looks like you're fighting bugs or beasts, no shambling dead at least." This news is treated with great relief by Click and Clack, who you gather don't like beast matches to begin with and loath undead.

"Now remember," she tells the group, "all of you are consistent winners, but our master needs some Stars too. Rosalynn and Ironwolf have the potential to be real crowd favorites, and Micheal and Vanitri were well recieved as well. So back them up, and give them thefinal kill blows if you have the option. I'm looking at you, Mountain." She fixes her eye on the halfling, who has been sharpening an improbably large axe since getting the ring.

While she is talking, Ironwolf's crystal discreetly climbs up her cloak and drops the note in her hood.

Once Petra leaves, Ironwolf grumbles to the others.

"I don't doubt her expertise regarding how to please a crowd, but I'm not sure she really understands how to fight. Worrying about silly things like who gets the killing blow will get us all killed. I say we fight to win first, and only worry about looking pretty if we somehow get the luxury."

"Looks like a group fight, so Ros, your inspiration will be very useful. Michael, you'll probably want to hold onto a spell of some sort just in case, but something that helps us all will be especialy effective. Ironwolf, perhaps you should discuss tactics with Click and Clack, I think the 3 of you could be very effective as a team. We should look for ways to stand out though, be leaders on the field, be strong, and make an impression."

Vanitri goes to check out the odds on each one of the four of them, as well as all 4 combined, and maybe any other interesting wagers.

"I hadn't planned for Click, Clack, or Mountain, but my original thought was to enlarge Ironwolf and have him work with Ros. If she uses her whip, that's a pair of people with long reach -- she helps him hit with the whip as well as her song, and Ironwolf should be able to do a good bit of damage with his enlarged falchion.
Vanitri, I thought you and I might work together again: go for the flank and if it has kneecaps, I'll distract it while you kneecap it. If it doesn't have kneecaps, you distract it and I'll whack it.
Anybody know if centipedes even have kneecaps?"
Michael examines the other four? presumably? gladiators: Click, Clack, Mountain, and the fourth one's name is?
What are they looking like? Mountain obviously has a very large axe....
(Deep in the recesses of his mind, he has a vision of an angry halfling with a big axe and a giant Ironwolf...the phrase "Fastball Special" resounds in his ears.

Vanitri nods to Michael "We may have to work as a team of more than just a pair, since we don't know how many critters there will be. I think we best plan to work as a group, and try to isolate and surround them as we can. Pick them off one at a time, and take them down. Till we know more, we'll need to be flexable."

As it occures to him, he also adds "And we should prepare for poison, just in case."

The eight member of the team, who usually pairs with the Mountain, is Tiny - a hulking half orc who apparently fights without armor or weapons.

(ooc: can folks clarify which of your comments were for the whole group of 8 and which were among the 4 of you?)

At the betting office, the odds on any given one of you walking out of the ring are close to even - you would risk 5 gold to win 4. If you bet on all four of you as a group, you would risk 3 to win 5. For all eight in the fight, its 2 for 5.

Rosalynn listens and nods to the comments of the others.

Actually Big brother, I was thinking of just using my bow this time....I can't really do much damage with the whip.

But if we start out close togeather with myself in the center, I can sing to inspire us and that shall help."
