so I might go with Bjork.

Not a bad recommendation.

I'll throw in Hedningarna as well.

YouTube - hedningarna

Both uptempo and hautingly eerie, this might fit the bill.

found a couple myself - some Russian spiritual singer here:

Captivating music? How about something really annoying that you can't get out of your head inspite of yourself.

"Staying Alive", the old disco song, had that effect on me and my coworkers last summer when some jerk hummed, that somebody else YouTubed the video, etc.

So lame, but as infectious as a "social disease" at a 70's disco.

While it is not quite a cappella (but it is close to it), the Song of Nephilim from the Xenosaga videogames has a female voice, is lyric-less, and is surreal and haunting. It was the first thing that came to mind for me when I saw this thread.

Unfortunately, I can only find a single 1 minute version, even though I could swear there was a better and longer version that was looped often in the actual games... My youtube-fu fails me.

I haven't listened to all the music in this thread yet, but that Bulgarian Voices one actually gets pretty cool in the middle (all hail the YouTube technology that lets me link to the right point in the video).

Loreena McKennitt was going to be one of my choices here. But (IMO) a GREAT choice is Sheila Chandra.

Her voice is gorgeous and haunting and pulls at your consciousness in intriguing ways...

...or you can go the mind-melting way and listen to her Speaking In Tongues series.

Melissa Williamson (Mary McGlynn) does great work for the Silent Hill series as well. I think Room of Angel would be great--given the lyrics.
