Muskets and Pistols - Discussion.

Hi.

Thinking about starting a new Campaign. The setting is postapokalyptic steampunk fantasy which means I will incorporate Gunpowder and the weapons of the early 19:th century.

My problem is that the Weapon descriptions in DMG 3.5 does not live up to what I expect according to armor and shields. The medieval armors went out of fashion just because they couldnt stop incoming bullets. My idea is to make the guns using Ranged Touch Attacks. Only deflection bonus, dex, dodge etc would work against these weapons but armor-bonus wouldnt give any effect. This would also make cover even more important.

What goes for loading the Weapons Im thinking along the line of full turn actions, or one standard action if YOu got the Rapid Reload feat..

So what do You think..? Any other ideas? Or maybe someone can point out some source material of this age/setting to me.

Thanks,.

Make them touch attacks with a flat -4 for inaccuracy maybe?

Altho, you probably do not really want them to be touch attacks, as this would deny ALL armor (including dragon scales, etc). Maybe just give them a number of AC points to ignore (like 8).

I suggest the book Sorcery and Steam as a good sourcebook for you.

In that book, manufactured armor and natural armor alike are halved against firearms (with a very rare few exceptions - ones especially reinforced to be effective against bullets).

This halving, for MAGIC armors, is before the magical enhancement bonus is applied.

Thanks- I wlll check it out.. It sounds exactly like what I need.. :D

Hmm. Beginning of 19th century still saw cavalry with breastplates who were a major factor on the battlefield because the muskets were not able to penetrate the armour at distances of more than ~30ft... IIRC. So the infantry only had one volley against a cavalry attack... by far not enough.

So, why not touch attacks in sneak attack range and normal attacks at longer distances? That smells nearly like a feat or class ability... Order of the Musket Initiate.

Yes, of course You are right. I just dont want people to run around in Full Plate feeling bullet proof..
I sure like that Prestige Class idea.. Have to think about that.
