MUST SEE! D&D related

I looked up the biography of the author of that article "Should Christians Play D&D?", and it turns out he was one of those people who has difficulty seperating game from reality.

Read his biography here http://www.chick.com/information/authors/schnoebelen.asp

It kind of disturbs me how they define all role players as evil Satan worshipers. Especially since their definition of roleplaying also encompasses the entire Theatre/Film/Television industry. I mean gee, pretending to be someone you're not, then putting it into a fantasy setting. That must mean that the entire cast of the Lord of the Rings worships the devil. And as a theatre major and a roleplayer, I'm a lost cause. I should just brand my head with a little sign that says "Satan Welcome."

My goodness. People who hold this opinion about gamers are the same ones who say that reading Harry Potter will lead you to the devil. They just really get my goat.

The mere fact that you have a goat to get in the first place proves your association with the devil. ;)

Dark Dungeon

I, too was playing AD&D when the Dark Dungeons pamphlet came out. It certainly gave us a lot of bad press at the time and since then I've always been particularly defensive about the hobby. I'd never checked out any of his other publications before, so I'm grateful to you guys for pointing them out. The defence against 'Dark Dungeons' is simple, show almost anyone any of the other pamphlets and it's obvious that we're dealing with a narrow minded bigot.

Still, a word of caution to all, if you're ever faced with this sort of thing, be polite, civil, and reasonable. Anything else proves that DnD has turned you into a raving madman. I may not play DnD any more, but I'll defend your right to do it!

In my view the most dangerous people are those who solely have an anti-RPG crusade going. Fortunately they seem to be a dying breed, certainly Mrs Pat Pulling is no longer with us (or should that be against us) so I assume that her organisation (if it could be graced with that term) BADD (Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons - for those newbies who don't know) is also defunct. Still, I still read the Pulling Report http://www.rpvonline.net/pulling_report.html occasionally, just to remind myself how easy it is for some people to unjustly demonise a minority.

About that:

I've heard from my pagan friends that "Harry Potter's spells are really close to some Wiccan traditions."

It's not inconcievable that a young mind who reads and enjoys Harry Potter and doesn't get any strong religious instruction will investigate religions similiar to the play-magic in J.K.Rowling's fantasy world (or, heck, D&D. The one common thread between my pagan friends is that they ALL play RPGs. OTOH, so do almost all of my friends...). Especially when they rebel, and want to find a way to "get out from under the stairs."

So don't mock those who think that "Harry Potter will lead you to the devil." Mock those who think that the answer is to ban Harry Potter, rather than for parents to show their children The Right Way. (That being whichever particular approximation of the Right Way that the parents respond to.)

Jack Chick and Christianity

Jack is a trademark bigot and many Christians know this and ignores his remarks and comments. As a former Christian apologist and elder in a church, I can categorically say that he isn't respected within most that kind of circle.

I usually discuss DnD with my Christian friends (and non-Christian friends) in the context of a fun, interactive game between friends. I also warn them not to play it lest they enjoy it. I've never had someone do other than end up agreeing that they were duped or that they had misunderstood it.
