My bard was combat-effective!

Just had to crow-that never happened before! One minute the party was scrambling to escape before the big ugly got a chance to kill us all, then two rounds later they were, like, let's go finish it off now that the bard has softened it up! Never thought I'd hear something like that!

OK, now back to your regular program. :D

the bard in our group is the strongest character physically in the party. she uses range tho...heading for arcane archer.

To paraphrase the simpsons "No you can't, sir no bard can!"

I'm interested in the build though, what type of bard was it?

p.s I have nothing against bards in combat

She's a Rog3/Brd5. She does OK in melee when she gets to sneak attack ... But to be perfectly honest, her damage output last night was from the Use Magic Device skill + a captured wand of Fireball. But a sequence of good caster level check rolls on her Dispel Magic before that took down every one of the protections and buffs that had cowed even our barbarian. (Maybe the cleric and druid will finally start preparing more Dispels now.)

Congratulations!!

I think bards are great as a support character (even D&D 3rd ed), because they can do a little of everything. I find them very effective- just not in the same way that a straight fighter is effective.

It sounds like you had a good time as well! Can't beat that.

Are you using 3.0 or 3.5 rules?

Just idle curiosity.

It's a long-running 3.0 game, with some 3.5 rules starting to creep in. Definitely a 3.0 Rogue/Bard-and I hope that if we did a full conversion, I'd get to re-do some character development choices. (Some I'd have to-some of her spells have been dropped from the bard list or changed levels ...) In 3.5, I'd definitely have limited her to one Rogue level-I went to third in Rogue mainly for the Uncanny Dodge and the extra skill points. Not worth taking four levels for UD, though, especially now that that would be highly detrimental to her bardic music.

In 3e the 3rd level of rogue was one of the best levels in the game. Very hard to pass up.
