The more significant question remains: what age group are we discussing? Also: how are apart in ages are they?

I agree with the folks who represent that if they're not into the combat aspect, D&D may not be the ideal system to teach them, at least at the outset.

I would recommend the Young Persons Adventurer's League for aid, and the YPAL Adventurer's Atlas in specific for reviews of different 'starter' RPGs. Three of the best are Faery's Tale, The Prince's Kingdom and Zantabulous Zorceror of Zo.
