My favorite race to play as a character is...

  • Yoo-man. If it was good enough for Gygax, it's good enough for me.

  • Dwarf. If it's not a Scottish accent, it's cra... not good.

  • Elf (not drow). Legolas is dreamy.

  • Gnome. Not just for gardens anymore.

  • Half-elf, all awesome.

  • Half-orc. Let's not talk about the backstory.

  • Halfling. Well, I don't want no short people round here.

  • Drizzt Do'Urden.

  • Tiefling. Demons are cool.

    Votes: 8 5.4%
  • Dragonborn. I could really use something for my breath.

Never had a favorite race . . . til I played Tyr (Tyranny), a tiefling warlord. Even then, didn't realize I had a fav race til I played Azruel, a tiefling wizard in 5e.

I see a pattern starting here :).

The three races I have tended to play with 5e are humans, half elves and dwarves. I have enjoyed them all, but I think if pushed to choose one, I like my dwarven character best of all. My dwarf doesn't speak with a scottish accent though!

Halflings have always been the best, just objectively. In AD&D, their Strength penalty didn't matter since you probably weren't getting any benefit from Strength anyway. In 3.x, their bonus to saves was better than any other racial trait. In 5E, their luck thing is just ridiculously better than any other racial trait.

I don't remember what their gimmick was in 4E, but I'm sure it was awesome. Halflings are always awesome.

I notice that people often attach for irrational reasons (for example, other than playing humans, my two other favorite races are gnomes and half-orcs... but primarily because, at the time, no one else was playing them).

What do you enjoy about Tieflings? I have to admit, my experience with them is limited, and my group ruled them out when we move to 5e.
With my 4e PC, I got to play against type. He was basically a good guy (despite what the name and racial backround might imply). It's the story behind the race that I enjoy, more than the actual mechanics.

With my 5e character, it's the idea that he's an exotic race. He's a noble with a retinue of three retainers (as per the backround). They're all tieflings but unlike my PC, they are commoners (intended to fade into the backround). Subverting the normal expectations for an exotic race:).

I like human, and I prefer my campaign worlds to be humanocentric.

What I'd really like is for D&D to allow some mechanical differentiation within humanity...not necessarily by ethnicity, to avoid claims of "unfortunate implications" because Flan get a bonus to intelligence, and bakluni get a bonus to charisma, to take one example, and instead have people pick humans based on type: a "big bruiser" who gets bonuses to strength and con, with say a minor ability to rage, or "lithe charmer" with bonuses to dex and charisma, with a minor ability of "luck" (if those sounds a little like the halfling and half-orc...well yeah).

I like the mechanical packages races offer, I just don't like the requirement to roleplay one.

Halflings!!
honestly they feel a little op sometimes, between lucky(1/400 chance to roll a 1...) Nimble, and Brave(I aint scurrd!) they have the best features. On top of that +2 to dex is probably the most useful of the physical stats to boost, and best of all no more penalty for being small!(small weapons do the same damage now)
Ive only had one halfling character(2 humans for story reasons) but he was far and away my favorite.

My favorite race to play has always been human. Goliath really started to resonate with me after reading 3e Races of Stone and playing them in 4e. There are some interesting books recently that involve tiefling and I played with someone who had a really cool tiefling bard. Though they didn't catch my interest the same as goliath.
