I just tried to participate in that open forum web chat for Green Ronin. i felt like i was trying to hold a conversation in a room full of screaming children. Are all web chats like that, or was this an exception?

Not all web chats are like that. Dont look negativly on green ronin either its not their fault.

Its been suggested before to them, but the people running the chat dont care to improve their methods.

A few months ago I ran a chat for D20modern and Mr Pramas was one of the guests. Along with Rich Redman, Stan!, Eric Cagle and others.

It ran nice and smooth.

Though, i should add. The moderated chat was ruined by bad connectivity *Cough cough* and Chris Pramas showed up anyway so they are proceding with an unmoderated chat.

Moderated chats run better.

Best place still for chats is still IRC. The problem is that IRC is not very user friendly for people who have never used it.

Thanks for trying to explain ArthurQ. And now for what really happened...

There is a router downline from the IRC server, chat.psionics.net. that has some issues. From what I understand, the company that owns said router has been advised of the problem with no intent to resolve the issue. It's still being looked at.

I apologize, Treebore, that the chat was chaotic to you. To be honest the channel sees that much action sometimes on a regualr night, so keeping up with the conversation seemed easy enough for me, and due to the fact that every single person was peered within a ten minute period on more than one occasion, we felt it best to leave it unmoderated (meaning everyone in the channel could speak, not just the Channel Operators and Chris Pramas) in case the Ops peered etc., which we did, many times, during the course of the informal chat.

Still, Chris stayed around and toughed it out and answered every question asked of him, sooner or later. He was very understanding and very nice and even replied to my private message, so I know he was paying attention. Also, I'd like to reiterate that the chat was not formal and a formal, hosted, and moderated chat will be rescheduled when the connectivity issues are resolved and Chris and I can reschedule a mutually acceptable date. On behalf of channel #dnd3e and I am certain, chat.psionics.net, I apologize for the inconvenience any of this has caused and we hope you'll keep your browser pointed to EN World's Main News Page in order to keep abreast of the new interview date. Thanks for your understanding and patience and again, we are sorry for all those that are as dissapointed as we are that the chat did not go off as well as they normally do.

That depends on how quickly I can get with Bynw, Wil. For now we are saying no. We think we can get things fixed in a week's time, so keep those fingers or tentacles or what have you crossed.

There's a way to do such a chat that, when someone types something, only the moderator of the chat receives it. He then pastes a question that everyone sees and that the guests can answer at their leisure. Thus a perfect noise-signal ratio. I have no idea how it's done though. I've seen it in action on the WotC chats.

Trainz, that's what I mean by a moderated chat. You set to mode +m meaning only those with voice mode or above can type and be seen on the main channel screen. Folks in attendance simply send private messages to operators and then pass them to the host, who in turn, pastes them in. Voila, moderated chat. Called moderated because +m means, you guessed it, moderated. And, usually EN World chats in #dnd3e are moderated, but since the chat was already called off before Chris Pramas even arrived, we left it unmodded and he just said he'd like to hang out, so did.

I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea from this informal chat, it was not a normal operation for EN World's Official Chat Channel, but since it was bizzare circumstances, we let formality slide and people still had fun.
