What can a melee fighter do to get in on the action?!

*d20 Modern, set in 1879. :)

Buy a shotgun. Or challenge a highbinder to a hatchet fight. Or go where melee is a better option. Like a train full of innocent passengers.

I mean, seriously, what did you expect in 1879?

In 1829, yes, your character would be sitting pretty--no revolvers here, no sir! Just bowie knives and arkansas toothpicks as far as the eye can see! By 1879, you've got lots of revolvers floating around...that's the way it is.

Save money.
Forget the fancy darts.

Spend that first round charging in like a madwoman ... then you can knife them all you want AND provide cover for them so your buddies don't down them while you work.

Suggest that the GM - The Universe, correct? - try spreading out the opponents a bit more, or use more mooks.
And remember that as the wife of the GM you have many means of persuasion at your disposal. :)

Just stand around, looking impressive and acting like the rest of the party are all acting on your orders, or go stealth and go in ahead of the party by yourself, allowing them to catch up for large encounters.

And you can still use the Str poison but on your knife, so instead of throw-charge-grapple it's charge-stab-grapple.

Close, but don't use the darts on the characters, use it on the players

Her poison does Strength damage - it's such a common dump stat that most players wouldn't stand a chance! I'd be incapacitated for *days* just from wafting the poison past my nose...if I could only get the damn vial open! *sobs*

Hey now! She's a creative and interesting character (Chinese acrobat turned circus performer turned assassin turned adventurer- SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY!)... but her real disadvantage is the fact that she's not a gun person. Her hands are more useful than guns. :D

Show the other PCs how useful her hands are, then!
If you've got skills, use them...but there just isn't a whole lot to be done for your character, except to run towards one and grapple him for interrogation, I guess.

Generally, most combat in modernish games I play takes range at between fifty and ten meters.

You should be able to charge in and do nasty stuff. Improved initiative. Unsure how firearms work in D20 modern, but you might ask if using them while right next to you provokes an AoO.

(Ever see Lethal Weapon 4? Jet Li obviously takes some AoO's at Mel Gibson and Danny Glovers characters when they try to shoot him up close.
