After seeing Return of the King:
I thought the eagles were used alot better in the movie then the book. They had a much better entrarnce, and they fight the fell beasts for awhile, so it makes more sense for them to look for the two hobbits, since they are already there. The book makes it sound like the eagles just show up to rescue them out of no place.
. I can accept the eagles in the movie.

HAHA, you are exactly right Salthanas....

KenM, you honestly might possibly need a re read of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. If none of the very well done posts above don't make you see how clearly why, the eagles in the books are used they way they are.

You are right, I do need to reread them, been awhile.

why...

I'll tell you why they don't just fly in on eagles, pushing all other arguements to the side for now...because it wouldn't have made a good book.

"we need to destroy the ring" said Elrond
"Ok, let me call the eagles and we'll just drop it in the volcano" Gandalf replies.
"Sweet, I'll set up the celebration for afterward" says Elrond as he psychically calls Galadriel.

THE END

See? not quite as exciting or epic...
