My PCs went to Thay! I wasn’t expecting this! Help!

CR 18. They'll have improved invisibility and they do +8d6 sneak attack damage.

The party is tough and smart, but the usually don't know when to run away...

Well it depends on what spells they have left, how much they are preped, and what special stuff they have (like the ability to see invisible at will , ect..).

I have been playing 3rd for 3 years now and a lot of that is high level play, and with any encounter at that level, it seems to be really easy or very deadly.

The Red Wizards want these PCs gone. Red Wizards are powerful. So, I'm throwing something really powerful at the PCs. I don't feel bad about it because they didn't have to go to Thay. At this level they can handle a few deaths easily - I just hope they bolt when 1-2 of them get killed. Of course, they could surprise me and win. Its a EL of 20, but they could win maybe....

Tell us, how do you intend to utterly maim them? >:>

Personally I dont agree with what you're doing d12.

A CR 15 monster will take 20% of their resources. This is an encounter of monsters with CR 20. and the EL is likley higher depending how prepared either side is and exactly how many monsters you use.

You're outright trying to kill the pc's now cause they took a path you werent prepared for when there are a lot of other options (like the ones i wrote about above.)

Also I dont think your plan is realistic to the Red Wizards and how they think. Summoning demons of that power level will pull a LOT of resources. yes the RW do have those resources but they are tied into the economy of Thay and other little things.

To summon something that strong you would need an epic RW and there arent many Epic RW other then the 12 that run the nation. Why would they waste resources on something they could do themselves.

Start small, grow big. Its like a snowball falling down a mountain side....at first it rams into trees and walls, breaking up
but the farther it goes the bigger it gets, and eventually it knocks the trees over or sends everyone running.

I dont agree with how you're dealing with this, but either way the important thing is that everyone has fun. Including you.

So i hope things work out and good luck!

I dunno about that, ArtQ. It's my understanding that the Thayan Red Wizards don't mess around when they get attacked on their home turf. I think it would make sense that all possible resources would be expended to get rid of this threat, and consider that they don't know wether or not there are more of them waiting on the other side of the portal. Maybe these few are just a scout force to secure the area before the main death squads come through. Personally, I could easily see a bunch of wizards showing up and all dropping souped-up fireballs, lightning bolts, etc. on the party, in addition to summons. And the sic the slaves(monsters) on them when that's done. Think Thayan, think dirty.

Agreed, but a CR 20 demon is overkill.
The point is also that the higher ups wouldnt even know about what happened for a few hours and the lower downs would try solving it themselves. Being viewed incompetent in Thay is the same as being viewed incompitent in the empire.

"You are commander now!" etc, etc.

A Demon for the first strike is too much.
