Angcuru

First Post
I've been working out how I'm going to run my upcomming Forgotten Realms Campaign for some time now, and I've got a general idea of how it's going to flow.

First, a Bit of Background. :)

The central protagonist character in the party is an Avariel who's father is the last surviving Child of Bhaal; Angcuru Uuaina'melar. When all of the other Bhaalspawn were either slain or had chosen to give up their god's essence, Angcuru was given the choice of what to do with that essence. He could have chosen to become a god, but he instead decided to use the power within this essence to restore his beloved wife Aerie's wings to whatever extent he could(she is an Avariel who had been stripped of her wings as a result of several years of enslavement, and therefore ground-ridden), and to grant himself wings as well. Instead of fully restoring her wings, both he and she instead became able to sprout wings divine in nature at will, allowing her to regain flight and for he to join her in the sky.

Upon completing their business with Anguru's 'kin', he and Aerie immediately set off to find Aerie's home of Faenya-Dail, and Avariel city in the mountains a bit north of Rasheman. Normally they would have not been in such a hurry, but Aerie had recently found that she had become pregnant, and a safe location to deliver and raise the child was necessary. This also allowed them to in a way, 'dissappear' from the world stage for a stretch, which was necessary, as they had made MANY powerful enemies who would love nothing more than to destroy their future. So, naturally, an Avariel city which only the Avariel themselves knew existed was a good place to settle down.

When they arrived in Faenya-Dail by means of Aerie's good memory and a few Fly spells, her family was of course surprised to see her, as they had given her up for dead when she had dissappeared twenty years ago(trapped by slavers, wings eventually rotted from being caged and had to be amputated). Aerie and Angcuru slowly but surely melded into the community, eventually adapting to a life of safety and peace, rather than constant battle and danger.

During Angcuru and Aerie's wedding, the Elven Goddess Aerdrie Feanya and the Gnomish God Baervar Wildwanderer, both of whom Aerie paid equal homage to, appeared and gave their blessing to the couple. These deities gave their blessing to that Aerie and all her future descendants, would age as Angcuru did, so that they would all age as Moon Elves, not to be seperated from each other by the short Avariel lifespan. (NOTE: Aerie had become a very powerful cleric, and had kept her faith though many incredibly horrible circumstances, which will be eventually be covered in my story hour "Echoes of Tragedy", once I get back to writing for it. )

They told few of their 'adventures', how powerful they had become, and of Angcuru's nature; they told only Aerie's parents and the ruling officials of Faenya-Dail; again out of necessity, this knowledge could only do harm if it was widely known. As far as everyone else was concerned, the Uuaina'melar family was as ordinary as any, if slightly wealthy(Can you say "plunder from years of high-level adventuring"? though they didn't flaunt their wealth.)

Now, time has passed, and Aerie had given birth to a son, whom was raised to be ignorant of his father's true nature, for his own well-being. The son has grown into a young man, confused as to why he seemed to be aging at half the rate that all the other Avariel seemed to be. This caused him to be unable to develop many lasting relationships, as his childhood friends had reached adulthood, gone out on their own, and even started families by the time he reached puberty. This coupled with stories of faraway lands and adventure to be had on the surface eventually led him into a life of adventure, which could not be halted by his parents. When a young Avariel sets his mind to something, there's no convincing him otherwise.

So this avariel goes off to find adventure, ending up in Rasheman hunting to gather valuable goods for a living, at least for now. Eventually he will run into the rest of the party, and they will be stuck in circumstances and situations that make forming an adventuring group seem like a very good idea.:D More on this once all of the characters are written up.

Now, while the PCs are off adventuring, the lack of a son to take care of leaves a bit of a gap in the lives of Aerie and Angcuru Uuaina'melar, causing them to contemplate taking up the adventuring life for themselves once more. However, they are left little choice once numerous reports of attacks by Green Dragons, who had in the past decimated the Avariel, begin flooding in from fringe Avariel settlements....muahaha. Of course, this will not surface or directly involve the PCs until a good dozen sessions in, when a big plot is discovered. Old enemies of Angcuru find his new home and set out to obliterate it, among other things...etc. etc.

Make sense?

So what are the chances a certain Sage from an alternate Prime Material Plane appears and informs the couple "Hey thought you should know, your Son is about to be chosen as the next incarnation of Rot and Decay." ;)

I hate to sound ignorant, but I don't follow you there.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that any semblance of a divine presence from in the bloodline no longer exists. Angcuru used his divine essence to restore Aerie's wings and to gain a pair for himself, and then sent the Bhaal essence to the abyss. So effectively, he's as mortal as the next elf, the same goes for his son.

Was that what you're asking about?

Where are the drow?

I thought it was a law that all FR campaigns had to involve drow.

Drow used to hunt Avariel. Logic dictates that is someone knows where the Avariel are, word spreads, and before you know it you have drow sharpening their scimitars while screaming "It's huntin' season! *crazed yuppie grin*"

And before anyone asks, there will be NO Drizz't involvement. He's long dead in my campaign. Yep, lotsa dead Drizz't going on here.

sounds like a cool way to rotate a char, for some reason this sounds really forign to me, im not used to having good PCs anymore. My players are always CE or NE, mainly cus all the cool FR prestieges are evil. Its good to know that there are still some good parties out there

As for the backdrop, tell me more about the level of the party and what antagonists u have planned, FR is really faction based, and i was wondering what u came up with

The party is starting out at LVL 1. Flat out LVL 1, no ifs ands or buts. If the party wants to be high level, it's going to have to work it's way there.

Since the story will begin in and focus mostly in the region of Rasheman for the first few sessions at least, I decided that perhaps throwing in a plot involving the Red Wizards of Thay could stir up some good conflict. Seeing as how the Red Wizards are slavers, and have probably never seen an Avariel in several centuries, the Avariel PC(yet to be named, chargen was interrupted  ) would be a prime target for any slaver caravans moving through.

They way I figure it happening is thus: when all the party members end up meeting together around a campfire along with a bunch of Rashemi hunters, the heavy drinking, commotion, firelight, etc. draws the attention of a group of Thayan slavers who are conducting a quick raid near the Thay/Rasheman border. If they don't notice the slavers, they get snatched up while they lie around the fire in drunken stupors or get clubbed over the head a dragged away while sleeping. If the party notices the slavers sneaking up on them, battle ensues, and either they somehow manage to overpower their attackers (yeah, right :p ) or get knocked out one by one and gathered up to be sold off as slaves. Power Word: Predicament. That'll get party cooperation going REAL fast.

If they don't manage to find a way out of this sticky situation on their own:

A) The slave caravan runs into another Rashemi hunting party, combat ensues, and during the melee the cages holding the PCs are bashed open and they have to fight to the death with the slavers, or run away and hope they don't get chased down.

B) An avariel extended patrol up in the sky happens to fly overhead and notice the avariel PC stuck in the cage. Not being the sort to leave one of their own in the clutches of slavers, the patrol attacks the slave caravan and manages to free the slaves after a fierce fight. This ends up doing two things in the game: saving the PCs' bacon, and allowing one of the slavers who survived the fight to return to Thay, report seeing a group of winged elves, Red Wizards take an interest, you know the drill.

C) Angcuru, having kept tabs on his son for a while, flies over the campsite where his son was making merry the next day and notices the disarray and one or two dead bodies, and tracks down the caravan. Rather than show himself, therefore revealing to his son that he did not fully have faith in his ability to make it on his own, Angcuru decides to help out his son in a less conspicuous manner. When the PC's regain conciousness after being knocked out to keep them in line on the way back to Thay, they awaken to see that they have stopped moving, and that their guards are lying dead in the ground with arrow protruding from their backs, one of the PCs finding one or two arrows sticking in the sides of their cages, and using that to cut the ropes and free themselves. Same end result as option B.

Depends on alot. From Unapproachable East, the Red Wizards seem as competant as the Germans in Hogan's Heros. And PC's do have a tendency to fight to the death rather than be captured, but I'm sure you have the saps all ready for them.;)

You could also have the Thayans fight each other, a little internal disagreement that gives the PC's a chance to escape. Angcuru popping up is a little too deux ex machina, and might create the impression he'll always be keeping a watch out. Better for them to find a way out of it themselves.

Or maybe be taken to a slave camp in Thay, where they can create a network of tunnels and help other slaves escape while their wacky Thayan guards never quite catch on.:)

*Nazi standing in front of big hole with a sign next to it that reads "ESCAPE TUNNEL", scratching his head*:D

I am a bit reluctant to have Angcuru save their hides this early, but eventually it just HAS to happen, one way or another. I mean, what good is an epic-level father who doesn't pull your ass out of the fire eventually? Bit didn't I state that there wouldn't be anything to suggest that Angcuru was involved? Perhaps a raiding party of the Tuigan Horde that was headed into Rasheman came by and slaughtered the Thayans to settle an old dispute given the opportunity? But yes, the first session IS a just a BIT early to have 'daddy' intervene.

I like the tunnel idea, it also provides a new obstacle, since Avariel are are a rule extreme claustrophobes. I can just picture it now, they blindfold him and drag him behind them through the tunnel.
"Are we there yet?"
"Not yet."
"Are we there yet?"
"No."
"Are we there ye-"
*STUNNING FIST ATTACK FROM THE MONK*
