Sword of the Arcane Order will let him stack ranger levels and wizard levels to determine wizard caster level. Ranger spell progression sucks, so if he wants higher level wizard spells I think he'll go for the wizard levels.
On the other hand, he'll have to sacrifice BAB to gain faster spell progression, so maybe he'll stay with ranger just for that reason.
MAD is already an issue, since Sword of the Arcane Order requires INT for your wizard spells as casting stat, even when you're preparing them in your ranger slots. It happens not to be a problem for this specific character.
The more I think about it, the more I realize he'll probably stick with ranger/arcane archer. He is basically a ranged fighter looking for advanced options, not really a caster at all, so I think he'll prefer BAB above increased spells.
