[My Turn] Help me choose a PrC...

I guess this isnt too out of place since Ive seen several of these here lately.

Im in a ravenloft campaign, and Ive been playing a Fighter 2/Cleric 2. The character was devoted to the Morninglord and had the sun and salvation domains.

However, he has become so dissillusioned with the morninglord (or indeed faith in general) and the fickle nature of the way the gods respond to their worshippers there, that he gave up the cloth. He has broken away from his faith.

Now originally, he was supposed to be an undead hunter type of character, and I think that should still figure in. One of his companions was killed, then raised as an undead of some type (he doesnt know for sure which). He was fond of her.

What kinds of PrC's can you reccomend? (Ill worry about the prereqs, just let me know whats out there and you think is appropriate for the kind of change in direction he has recently taken.)

Ask any questions, and Ill be happy to answer them. I need to get this figured out ASAP.

That would be good, except that he has already set aside his faith, completely. He is an ex cleric and lost all of his abilities.

If you are dissillusioned with the gods you *could* go the extreme route and become an Athar. You can find them in Dragon 287. They are pretty much a divine caster that renounces all the gods as fakes, instead they "worship" a force called the Great Unknown.

They get some immuntites, the ability to stop/disturb normal clerics casting and after a few levels they are able to start casting divine spells again (drawing on the power of the Great Unknown).

Here's a flavor quote from the classes write up, i think it sums up the class:

Jaya stared up at the man in disbelief as her healing spell fizzled and her companion died. "What did you expect, pupper?" the athar sneered at her. "I told you the Powers were fakes."

Yeah, Athar is a good choice. I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one other d20 PrC that's basically an "anti-cleric," but I can't remember it right now.

If you like Hunter of the Dead, but it's not a good fit because you've forsaken your faith, you could become a Foe Hunter (undead). There are other d20 undead-hunting PrCs, as well, I'm pretty sure.

If he's become all dark and grim since having lost his faith, you might even consider heading toward Blackguard. He wouldn't have to be an orphanage-closing, kitten-drowning kind of evil guy, but just a cold, merciless, obsessed kind of evil guy (who doesn't consider himself evil at all). Or, he could go a 180 from the Morninglord and start gaining powers from shadow and darkness. The Nightcloak PrC from Faiths and Pantheons is a worshipper of Shar, goddess of darkness, but maybe your DM could modify it for Ravenloft.

If you want to use the Kalamar Player's Guide (which is not just for the Kalamar setting) there is an "undead hunter" type and a "anti-cleric"-type there too.

But if you REALLY want to fall from grace, maybe a Blackguard? :)

I just checked out the Athar (Dragon #287, page 45) and want to add my vote to it. Very nice PrC with lots of flavor and roleplaying potential.

I've considered the Athar and the ghostwalker, either could be a path I could take. Im concerned that they wont 'fit' into ravenloft.

For the Athar, how many divine effects am I likely to run into? Most of the Athars abilities counter divine powers and spells. We have mostly been dealing with undead of various types (but I think we are about to see some lycanthropy).

Ghostwalker will require me to create an alternate persona (one designed to protect his identity from those he hunts, since if they learn his true name, he loses many benefits.)

I had completely ignored the idea of a foe-hunter of the undead. Ill take a look.

Looking over the foe hunter, I think I like it. I just have to talk my DM into letting me multiclass as a ranger. (Of course, it would be for frontloading purposes only...I need a favored enemy and track.)

Very cool.
