I wouldn't be surprised if she is afraid of uniformed police officers for the rest of her life.

Not to go off on a tangent here, but WTF? Doesn't your county or state have a Child Protective Service department to handle this kind of thing? I worked for the CPS dept. in my county here for a few months, and social workers did everything. They might have brought a cop along just in case something got out of hand in this particular case, but it still would have been a nice friendly social worker taking the child, not a big scary cop .

Anyway, sorry you had such a lousy day. I don't envy police officers.

Well, your misery made some people feel better. I felt proud to be a part of North American society when I read about the emotional impact your work had on you. It made me feel less fearful that an event like the holocaust could happen here with ease. It is reassuring to live in a society where a law enforcement officer can question the rightness of the instructions he carried out on a public message board and receive declarations of sympathy from people who see him as a fellow gamer before they see him as a cop.

It made me feel good to know that a crying child can cut through anonymity, alienation, laws and regulations and touch someone so directly and personally. We all do work that sometimes inadvertently hurts innocent people. You just have the courage to work in a profession where you have to confront that hurt directly. And I commend you for that strength.

I hope to get to meet some of you at GenCon this month, and I'll be sure to thank you in person. I think that a vacation and my first trip to GenCon will go a long way toward resetting my perspective.

Seriously, man, I am so proud of people like you who can do the really tough jobs that need to be done. My ex-wife spent a year when she was younger as a secretary in a State Police barracks and just typing up some of the reports was almost too much for her. Her father was a trooper for 20+ years and saw things that will haunt him forever.

You, sir, are officially one of my heroes.
