D&D 5E Mystara 5th Edition Fan Made Supplement

You've made a lot of design choices I may not fully embrace, but this work is impressive. Mystara was one of the few campaign settings I voted for in WotC's recent survey.

It's good to see an "old friend." I haven't played in Mystara since 2e, though most of my Mystara experience was during the end of the BEMCI era. Makes me want to crack open the Rules Cyclopedia and relive my middle school years of gaming.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this. Thank you, and keep up the good work.

Was a chore trying to balance the extremely restrictive nature of BECMI and the openness of 5th while keeping the original concepts. Original version of Hin Master had NO spells recouped outside the shire until almost master level for example. Dervish's powers didn't work outside Ylaruam. Had to give some balance in 5th, but keep a few restrictions to show these classes don't travel very far. BECMI's weapon mastery system was iconic for it, but when I try to introduce it to 5th, people complain it's for power gaming only. Considering the original you had to concentrate exclusively to get the good stuff, there was a trade off for Grandmastery. Somethings had to be wholly reinvented because they just would not transfer over cleaning, others like the lupin and rakasta had so many different versions had to pick one and ignore the other versions. Now trying to raise funds to replace the filler art, the artists that offered to help still want to get paid. Thanks for the support.

I think that is exactly the balancing factor that is currently missing. In the original weapon mastery version a fighter was only proficient in two weapons at level one. Levels 3,6,9,11,15,23,30, and 36 permitted learning a new weapon or learning to be better with a current weapon.

Currently, martial skill is done in broad types. Some are more broadly useful than others. For example the greatclub is the only two handed simple weapon so the category is kind of pointless, while the one handed/versatile martial category is loaded with weapon choices.

So what if the original concept were retained? What if you choose this path at first level, and only get to add your proficiency bonus to two or three weapons of your choice. As you level, you can then spend your improvement slots among those weapons (or learn a new weapon). Thus if you have to fight with an unfamiliar weapon you cannot add your proficiency bonus.

It only works with one weapon now, you don't get the whole class of weapons. Yes it is very skewed to martial over simple, blame the trident for that. The trident and the spear are identical in all aspects, except the spear is simple and the trident is martial. The spear costs a lot less as well. So why ever take the trident? The name is misleading, it's more of a sword master or blade master, but need something to show it's a person who trains in a single weapon over all others. Weaponmaster is perfect, but that's the name of a feat. Just realized the save didn't take so that's not clear in the doc. Fixing it now.

Clearly says it's one specific weapon, will update tomorrow.

There, now clearly says only one weapon.

According the powers that be in a friendly but stern reminder, as long as I don't any make money off this, it's just fan stuff. They haven't done anything with it in 20 years didn't expect there to be this much love still for it. Was told replacing the art with custom stuff would be appreciated, if nothing else than for the artists. Did have to reword the Go Fund Me to their liking.

I did get a message telling me what was and wasn't allowed. That's why you see the "NOT FOR SALE" and the copyright reminder on page 2. Fan art is fine, and actually preferred, but can't say 'pay for art and you'll get stuff'. All costs to make this have to be mine alone. Anybody want to donate art, that's up to you as long as it's your art.

Did a major update, including adding the rules for economics I've been fighting with for a while. That was a huge part of Mystara, several subclasses dealt with the economics of it. Made some other adjustments as well and clarified the battle master so it's just a single weapon.
