Mythological Epic Monsters

Kaodi

Legend
So, I was perusing D&Dg this morning or yesterday, and suddenly I put 2 & 2 together, and came up with an idea of another epic monster we could be seeing in the MM...

When you consider that they are going back to mythology for some ideas, and then you take the flaming snakes from that first Playtest Report, it seems that there could be an outside chance that the flaming snake of all flaming snakes could be available to lay the smackdown on... Apep, incarnation of evil.

If you are talking about snakes, then why not go with the Midgard Serpent, the monster that surrounds the world, and will poison the world when Ragnarok comes.

Jormungand is just way too big to be an enemy in D&D, whereas Apep is a nice, normal colossal size. For some reason, it just seemed to fit, hehehe... I mean, what other kind of cultist would use a spell that makes fiery snakes, other than Apep?

isnt Dendar the Night Serpant supposed to be basically a Rip off of Jormungandr?
Anyway I always thought something that large should have a Str score way into the hundreds. Unfortunatly, WOTC is more interested in making thing beatable than the way they should be.
I dont think I would ever be satisfied with a pure mythology based MM made by WOTC. I like their stuff, but they care more about beating it.

Pretty much I recall that Dendar the Night Serpent and some wolf in the Realms settings are ripoffs of Norse mythos. (I recall that Dragon Magazine had an article where the wolf was bound in a story that would have violated copyright law if it was not part of the public domain -- with Tyr losing his hand in the process and Gond, instead of the Norse dwarves making the chain to bind the worlf.)

However, it is possible that some of the mythological creatures will have progeny. Linnorms might be the progeny of Jormungandr, and there were flame snakes associated with Apep in the 1st Edition Deities and Demigods book.

The Hecathonheires, the Gorgons, the cockatrice, and many other creatures from myth and legend can be brought in for the PCs to battle. (The Hecatonheires the PCs face may be a far weaker version of what would challenge the gods of Olympus, but still a remarkable challenge.)
