You know, the more I research this thing, the less I know about it.

It does look like a Hawkmoth, but it doesn't resemble any kind that I can find.

The closest that I've been able to find is the Lettered Sphinx, a kind of Hawk Moth native to the Pennsylvania region, but it's still not very close at all. I'm amazed at how many kinds of moths there are, and the diversity of their appearance, that's for sure.

The real distinguishing thing are the wings, which are very atypical. They're facing down instead of up, and the secondary wings are just little strips, very small and almost vestigal in appearance. Weird.

And now we've identified the actual moth in question, and it turns out it's NOT a hawk-moth, or even a member of the Sphingidae family at all.

It is, in fact a Spotted Apatelodes, of the Apatelodidae family, found all about the US, but especially in the Ohio-Pennsylvania-Maryland region (though they can be found in Texas, SC and elsewhere), and was first identified in 1797. Who knew? Technically, I think they are classified as being related to a silk-worm moth.

The thing that makes them unique (the family, that is) is their posture when landing, which is what you see above. The way they curl their thorax/abdomen upwards and how they lay their wings while at rest are somewhat unusual for a moth, as are their wing configuration for the Spotted one.

I'm going to take a stab at statting it out in a little bit.

This isn't "Humor", this is disgusting

Really, I hate moths. But it could've been worse - a giant snail for instance...

But dude, if it was a snail we could attach flails to its head and it'd be the most rockin' monster ever :)

XD

My girlfriend found something like that on her grill once. I think she took pictures. Now I have to ask for copies so I can see if it's the same thing.

Gawd, that would make such a cool monster...

Crank it up to Medium- or Large-Size and give it the Outsider type. I'd probably make it some sort of Chaos beast, with a bunch of (Sp) powers that let it alter reality, like Enlarge/Reduce and Mass Polymorph.... Oh, that's fun...

Wow! I thought your last picture was a picture of a dragon miniature at first, until I read the caption. That's very cool!

As for stats, well, I don't want to give anything away, but you could do worse than to read Perdido Street Station and stat it out as a slakemoth.

It is very cool, I'm going to stat it right now!
Well, I have a couple of ideas for this thing, depending on the slant you want to take. Since I am terrible about following "official" guidelines for creating stats I will just give my suggestions.

One idea is to create the Scorpion Moth, a Medium, or perhaps Large creature with a scaly tail and poisonous barb on the end. It's ability to Move Silently is frighteningly high, though it's flight ability is not the greatest. The neurotoxin it injects with the barbed tail first causes convulsions, followed by paralysis and death. One would imagine that either crushing damage or electrical damage would be bad for them.

Another idea could be the Dragon Moth. This time make them Small, but advancable to Medium. Scaled body with the feathery moth wings. The twisted and slightly humorous side of me says to give them either a light or electric attack. People would mistakenly think it is a breath weapon, but it actually comes from the tail. Again, an obscenely high Move Silently with at most an average ability to fly. These could attack in swarms, making their seemingly insignificant individual damage level much more devastating.

That's all I have for now, though I am sure I could come up with more given some time.

I went a head and stated it anyway Sjmiller, but because it doesn't belong here it's only the stats and its small.
