Name one thing you love and one thing you hate about 4e D&D

Love: The "points of light" campaign setting emphasis. Good idea.

Hate: The collapsing of magical and non-magical classes. And most everything else.

Love: That ability levels now match PC/Class levels. IOW, 3rd level in a class opens up the 3rd level abilities- gone are the days of 6th level mages just learning 3rd level spells. It was about dang time- that was one of the most confusing things I had to explain to new players.

Hate: Pretty much everything else.

Love: The detatchment of the rules from the world.

Hate: Lack of any rules dealing with pets, hirelings, henchmen, etc.

Hate: Lack of some options. I want reincarnate!

That's not a rule, sir. That is flavor. A Raise Dead that you only paid 300 gp for. Roll on random table, apply result.

LOVE

An even more unified core mechanic.

HATE

Cookie cutter classes with way too much sugar. Bad-ass should not be a default, it should be an aspiration.

Love:
Monsters. Both creating and running them. Just... like, big sloppy, wet-kiss smoochie love.

Hate:
On balance, the Stealth rules (original and errata'd). They kind of work, but not quite good enough to avoid arguments around the table with pedantic players.

Love: Gelatinous cube. Last session we fought an iconic D&D monster. When it had engulfed 3 of the 4 party members it was the first time in all of the 4e games I've played that I've thought, "This has been really well implemented in 4e."

Hate: So far, just about anything else that hasn't been a gelatinous cube.

Love: Simplicity. It is much easier to run than 3E while offering more options that 1E or 2E.

Hate: Still runs too much like a tactical miniatures wargame. The rules pretty much assume that you will use minis and maps.

LOVE powers are fun
HATE classes are forced into extremely narrow advancement pathes with way too much focus on combat

I love a lot about 4E...if I had to pick one, I'd say that there's a simplicity about a lot of it that I find very attractive in a game system.

I hate a lot about 4E...most of those things fall into a general category of things that make me feel like I'm struggling against the system to make the characters I want. This is mostly restrictions like the new multiclassing, the everything-a-paladin-does-is-a-shiny-miracle thing, the fact that only rangers are allowed to TWF, and suchlike.

(I like 4E's kukris).
