Naval Combat

I'm running a campaign that may have naval combat.

There doesn't seem to be any standardized rules for this, but I'm willing to bet this quandary has popped up before.

How do you handle naval combat in 4e?

You can do it as a skill challenge.

You can basically make each ship a creature with its own moves/attacks.

Or you can zoom in on the action, especially for things like boarding parties.

Get weird with it.

What specifically are you looking for? And how fine-grained rules do you want?

I'm just trying to learn the basics of naval combat. The only experience with naval ships is through Sid Meyer's "Pirates!" on the commodore 64... so yeah...no experience at all.

The possibility of a naval encounter would be the session after next, something involving human pirates attempting an attack on a merchant ship. The PCs are on the merchant ship

A boarding raid by the pirates would be ideal, but like all things in battle, few things go as planned.

PS I see some similar threads below this thread. I'll need to read through those tonight.
