NCAA: Dayton Flyer love?

Wow. Didn't know we had a fan base on the boards. I have never attended UD, but I have lived in Dayton all my life and follow the Flyers closely and am a big fan. I have attended two games this year (one through 100 level tickets from a vendor and the game over the Christmas break where we got free seat upgrades because of low attendance-real bad snow storm. By the way low attendance at a Flyers game is about 5,000 for those unaware)

As for the performance this year, it has been spectacular. Bucky Albers of the DDN was predicting a 500 season as a great success and now they are competing for the A10 Championship (They'll clinch a bye in the A10 tourney if Xavier will be kind enough to lose to Richmond tonight).

This team is young, very young. 1 SR, 5 JR (3 of which get playing time), 2 SO, and 8 FR.

8 Freshman. Of which 6 (Brian Roberts, Nick Stafford, Trent Meacham, Norman Plummer, Chris Alvarez, Jimmie Binnie) get regular playing time.

I wish nothing but the best this year, but watch closely the next 2-3 years. It will be exciting!

I will vent here that I was upset having stayed up till 1:00AM the last two years watching UD in the first round of the NCAA tourney only to watch them go down. That has been frustrating.

About all I know about them is that my GW Colonials downed them over the weekend...

Of course, we followed that up with a horrible loss to St. Joseph's... :(

Same thing happened my sophmore year. I was pulling my hair out. We were doing pretty good, except that our free throw percentage was something like 50%. If we had done 75% we would have gotten to round two.

Man. I was so upset, I burned a couch.

I pretty much stayed away from ESPN the following day. I knew they'd have that play all over the highlights.

Hehe. I remember whenever I met anyone from out of town who'd been to UD, they'd be like "kind of funny they put it right in the middle of that ghetto, isn't it?" A lot of the people gentrifying that neighborhood are my old classmates from the 'burbs.

Yeah but the area around UD really isn't that bad, it's not like UD is smack dab in the middle of Drexel or McPherson.

Now THAT'S funny.

Bah he's just making excuses...he would have burned it anyways. ;)

More than pride riding on UD's game at Xavier
By Bucky Albers
Dayton Daily News
Hello, UD fans:
Your Flyers will be playing for a divisional championship
Saturday afternoon.
Can you believe it?
If the Flyers can beat Xavier at the Cintas Center, they will win the Atlantic
10 West Division championship outright or share it with George Washington.
As you know if you've been a Dayton fan for very long, this team will be getting
a huge monkey off its back if it beats Xavier in Cincinnati.
The Musketeers have beaten UD 19 straight times in the Queen City. Not since
Jan. 10, 1981 has Dayton defeated Xavier in Cincinnati.
It's not difficult to understand why. Xavier teams during those 23 years have
had some very talented players. Xavier stars Tyrone Hill, Aaron Williams, Brian
Grant, James Posey and David West all have played in the NBA.
During that period, Dayton's only NBA players have been point guards Sedric
Toney and Negele Knight.
And Xavier's superior talent has resulted not only in victories over Dayton but
many trips to the NCAA Tournament.
This year, Xavier has no player who has established himself as a likely NBA
prospect. The Musketeers have had a wobbly season during which they have played
well on occasion and lousy on others. Xavier is clearly a team with a split
personality.
I presume the Muskies will be charged up for Saturday's meeting, but will that
be enough? Will they bring their "A" game to the Cintas Center? The Musketeers
look vulnerable to me.
The Flyers, who edged them, 59-55, at UD Arena on Feb. 19, could very well do it
again. And wouldn't that be something if this freshman-heavy squad that looked
so ordinary at the beginning of the season became the one to finally knock
Xavier's door down after so many highly-regarded Dayton teams of the past
failed.
Having been a witness to most of those 19 losses, I'd be very hesitant to wager
any of my hard-earned cash on a Dayton victory in Cincinnati. And yet I would
not be shocked if it happened.
Unfortunately for the Flyers, it's one of those all-or-nothing games. If they
win, they're the A-10 West champions and they get a first-round bye in the
tournament. If they lose, they slide all the way down to the third seed and get
no tangible reward for their successful season.
If that isn't a strong incentive for them to win, I don't know what it would
take.

-Sorry for the minor hijack-
Where do you Daytonians shop for/play your RPGs? I only go to school at UD, Im not from the immediate area. Any help would be super. Thanks.

Holy cow! I never see any Dayton love anywhere, much less on ENWorld.

Not only am I a graduate of that fine institution, but I am a former president of the Science Fiction Club.

Though my proudest moment was when, in 1994, I threw a beer at Coach Huggins, a man whom I despise.
