First Post
Hi there!

I have just received a cover preview for our upcoming monster book Tome of Horrors II, the sequel to our award-winning Tome of Horrors!

100% compatible with 3.5 rules, Tome of Horrors II contains over 250 never-before-seen monsters, from the arcanaplasm and the crucifixion spirit to the dreaded encephalon gorger and the extraplanar race of pain merchants known as the N'gathau. But what would a Necromancer Games product be without new demons and devils, including the flesh-rending shedim, the hulking chaaor, ever-shifting ooze demon, and a few fiendish entities that have never before seen print. And like the original Tome of Horrors, Tome of Horrors II is 100% Open Game Content!

Not looking forward to it at all. I think I'll just let this one slide.

Tome of Horrors was a great book, but so much of its attraction was from the fact that it converted so many old 1E monsters to 3E, thus allowing me to run my old 1E/2E adventures with the 3E rules.

Given that I'm very happy with the WotC monster books - and rarely use unusual monsters in any case - no real need for it. :)

Cheers!

Looks like another book to put on my "must buy" list since the first one was so good. :)
In general, I'm looking forward to it. But Merric's point is well taken--whether you liked Tome of Horrors I may not be relavent here--ToHII will be 100% original monsters and thus a very different product.

I was disappointed to find out that there were no plans to do another compendium of converted monsters. There are still some good ones that ToHI missed.

And putting them into ToH 2 would make sure they would be put next in a WotC product!

Seriously, I think that it would not have been possible.

On Necromancer's side, I don't think Clark and Scott want to be burned again with an unrespected gentleman's agreement. In the Fiend Folio alone, a whole 10% of the ToH critters that were not supposed to be officially published by WotC were printed.

On Wizards' side, the deal would have been much harsher to do now. From what I've heard, there was some heavy grounding involved ("you gave them what?!") once other staff members saw the list of beasties, and even without that aspect, WotC's cash expectations are much higher now. Compare the license deal for Ravenloft to the one for Dragonlance...

Hey, me again! :) I just received some quotes from Monte about ToHII and posted them on our site. Thought I'd post 'em here, too. So, here they are:

"If a role playing game is a gun, then a monster book is the ammunition. If that's the case, then Tome of Horrors is a case of hollow point, explosive shells!"
--Monte Cook

"This book is all about new surprises, like the bloodsuckle, the fear guard, and the thundershrike. Your players won't be expecting these guys. They won't know how these monsters work, what they do, or how to properly fight them. You can use this book to keep your players off balance throughout an entire campaign. There's no better way than throwing them a curve like some of the monsters contained in these pages. Each and every one of these creatures has some aspect to them that will make an encounter different from any other. You'll find yourself coming back to these pages again and again."
--Monte Cook

"A DM can never run out of tricks to poke up his sleeves before the session begins, and that's what each one of the gems in this book really is."
--Monte Cook

Now, does this sound interesting enough? :) I sure hope so!

Have fun!
