Need a Colossal Intelligent Creature

Yep thanks hong rub it in my face, those stats were some of the worst stuff I have ever written besides of course the Zeech and Hong comment over in the Artists forum.

My comment was think outside the box don't go with a Dragon because it meets the basic qualifications there are plenty of good fun Ideas for the creature that dont involve scales and and wings

You might even actually have the creature have treelike legs

Make him a Triant of some sort

What's wrong with it being a dragon, it's a classic, and not much says epic fantasy as drgons, titans and the occassional demon or devil...

Nothing is wrong with dragons, I just hate over using them when another monster could fit.

( of course Dragons in my world are rare, and Legendary creatures, and all types of dragon whether Red, or Silver can be good, or bad)

I just like the Idea brought to us by J R R T when he wrote about Smaug.

Rongoon

There's always room for new monsters.

Here's an idea: I like the prophetic back-story for this beast, and I gave it some thought. This thing is supposed to be very connected to night/darkness/etc, and it needs to be worshipped. How about something that is connected to nightmares? It feeds off of 'worship', which in this case is a form of fear. It need not be horribly smart, but perhaps it is very connected to feelings and therefore very intuitive.
You could make it so that it is also incorporeal during the day, and with a distinct lack of power, like a wraith, but if so, it should have some sort of hiding place. I'd make it so it can shift to the Ethereal or the Shadow Plane, or maybe it can't leave either until nightfall.
The sonic breath weapon could be a cacophony of terrifying screams, but going with the nightmare concept, I thought something like a wind full of whispers that cause nausea/confusion/fear might be more appropriate.

Also, I thought about the business of it granting wishes, and the idea came to me that something connected to dreams might be able to read desires, and manifest them through illusion-type spells... some of which can certainly be real enough.

Hope this helps a bit. I'd make it an Aberration, but Outsider or Fay would do too.

Feeding off Fear

I like that. I like the idea that it feeds off fear.

However, I want this creature to be... hmm... what's the best way to put this... It's not intelligent enough (maybe a 10?) to know about other planes... It's smart, don't get me wrong... but not the sharpest tool in the shed.

There is one idea in there thatI really like, and something that really fits into the story. During the day Rongoon disappears. Not only incorporeal, but disappears... Maybe it goes to another plane or whatever... but it's just gone.

It will have a fear effect attached to it... I think that its size dictates that. But nothing too great... or maybe... you know... that point could be argued.

What I ment by treetrunks for legs... It's only an expression. :)

I have thought about just making it a young force dragon or a shadow dragon... but... And I mean, don't get me wrong. I love dragons. But I was more.. challanged(?) by the idea of creating a new monster.

So let's do that.

I was thinking it could be a d10 creature. Not quite a d12.

Sonic Breath Weapon and even a few other cool sonic spells or spell-like abilities.

I guess that gets the ball rolling.

Maybe it has a lower Int, and a Higher Wis

d10-- beasts, magical beasts, constructs, oozes all have a HD D10

D12--Dragons, Undead all have a HD d12

So by process of sorting

the Rangoon wont be a construct an ooze.

Magical beasts Magical beasts have dark vision with a range of 60 ft, and low light vision.

A Colossal Magical beast would have a HD of 32d10 have a Slam damage of 2d6, a Bite of 4d6, a Claw of 2d8, and a gore of 4d6

Advantages Decent intelligence, and wisdom, still an animal of a sorts, gets supernatural or extrodinary abilities, and has a BAB as fighter

New ideas on dragons

how about a dragon without wings something more like the chinese dragon, or the Serpent dog from Never ending story

There is a neat idea remember the white canine looking serpent in Neverending Story Had no wings and could fly well howsabout

Can not fly is a green brown colored serpent dog with large trunk like legs. He isnt very smart but he is wise, always filled with sage advice for the people that worship him.

He has the Sonic breath weapon Sentinals song ( A singing sound that raises in pitch until it begins to deafen and destroy things)

And he is a small god (out of the article in dragon # 293 worshiped by the peasant folk, and nobles alike in the small backwater country in which he lairs.

Travellers who journey through and need healing can receive such at a little wayward shrine at the edge of the forest, which is maintained by whoever uses the shrines service, and only those who share a bit of their food will receive healing from the Rongoon's shrine. ( I would make him a d8 Aberation much like the naga and add the half dragon template, or the half celestial)

When the paladin comes to kill this creature he finds it a peaceful and helpful being ( maybe after he kills it) who is the guardian of his wooded homeland. Rumours have placed the Rongoon in more than one place at one time and many feel that this proves the beings godhood. However this is not so. There are two of these beings in the land One Rongoon-Sar, watches over the children that play in the woods, leaves food out for the elves, and will heal folk who stop by his shrine. Rongoon-dor on the other hand is evil born of a hatred for all mankind he has been terrorizing the realms that pay not his tribute more intellegent than his brother, Dor has worked a deal out with the High priestess of Rongoon in which he will force outlying nations to believe in the might of his [brothers] Church. Because of this fear of him and the faith that Rongoon-Sar has been given both Rongoon's are capable of granting spells up to 4th level And both of the Rongoon's have the Domain Nature, Rongoon-Sar is capable the Domain plant, and Rongoon-Dor is capable of the domain Treachery.

All Praise Rongoon, or He'll Step on Thee

I don't think that Rongoon has to be necessarily bright to be able to shift planes. I had the notion it was sort of dense, really, but very persistent and very intuitive; it SEEMS smart sometimes because it is good at reading reactions and emotions. The plane-shifting could be a reflexive thing that Rongoon doesn't even understand... it just does. Like us leaving the house in the morning.

I agree with Sidran; make it a little dense, but give it a high WIS and a higher CHA. I also agree with the Magical Beast angle, but I stand by Aberration too. I suppose it depends on how weird it looks.

I had another idea for the sonic, too: Maybe it's something that creates panic, and Rongoon 'inhales' the fear that results. Maybe somebody who fails the save really badly falls down and babbles in worship, praying for Rongoon not to crush them.

I'm liking this idea of yours. It's very evocative. Mind if I do a variant myself?

Rongoon v2.2?

I'm still hammering out the stats on this, but I thought I'd share my interpretation of this beast-god.

I had this image of something shaped rather like a musk ox or rhinocerous, with a pair of low curving horns and really thick limbs and neck. Colossal, of course, and colored mostly dark pearly grey, with onyx-like horns, hooves and strands of ropy oily looking hair hanging in long ropes like a thin mane and from the fetlocks. The upper back is covered in a riddled twisting mass of coiled and layered 'armor', an integument-like imitation of a rhino's hide, but full of small 'burrows' and nooks. Similar whorled armor protects the rest of the body, but it is only on the body that the armor forms these winding burrows.
The thing's face is similar to an ox, with a broad mouth that opens very wide indeed, and two completely black eyes that reflect no light or intelligence; only a distinct and powerful awareness.
Why the burrows? That's where Rongoon's Chosen live. Those killed by Rongoon are swallowed, and reborn as small, pallid mummified looking creatures that swarm in and around his great back. When Rongoon has no worship, he sends them forth to drag 'converts' to him. They also speak for him in some occasions, because Rongoon does not use his Voice unless in battle or when Proselytizing.
