I actually played a warforged fighter, and their stat bonuses are just right for a big axe or hammer wielding fighter. Brash Strike can give you striker-level damage and makes you a more attractive target, both good for a defender to do.
I took a slightly different approach and made a Tempest fighter, wielding an Urgosh. Both Two Weapon Rend and the fighting style feat that allows brash strike on combat challenge attacks meant that all of my extra fighter attacks were at +2 to hit and +3 damage. I felt it made me extra sticky.
If your character vision includes a big ass sword, I'd agree with Destil and keep Dex high, some of the heavy blade powers, and the best feat, reward a high dex. Not using a shield, you will appreciate those couple points to shore up your reflex as well. I would favor Reaping Strike over Cleave, since with Cleave you are kind of held to a condition. You might not always want to move your target around with Footwork Lure, so it will be beneficial to have an at will that you can use anytime and not screw things up.
Of course, switching if you can get a pretty good Dex and Wis you can qualify for HBO and take Sure Strike as your other at-will, meaning that your OA's now have your Wis bonus+2 to hit. Take feats/magic items to boost that and you are now a virtual brick wall that nobody can pass.
Sky is the limit with fighters, so it is really up to you what you want to play.
