Need a good melee char-must be old!

You really sound like you are looking for a Crusader from the Book of Nine Swords, though you didn't say you have access to that book. They even talk about an old Crusader in the book at one point (I seem to recall one of the nine swords was his).

Are psionics allowed?

I think a great stab at this could be made using psionics, magic of incarnum, book of nine swords, or some combination of them. If any of those are allowed.

Some classes allow you to ignore penalties for aging. What type of char are you thinking of play?

Was looking at playing a front line fighter with a high AC.
So I was looking for feats or classes where I can bump up my AC or combat abilities with Wis, Int, or Cha.

Right now I am looking at Fighter 2/Paladin 3 and then taking Divine Shield at level 6-the main problem here is that I cant take elusive target at level 6 with this type of class advancement.

I have also been thinking about cleric 1 (divine shield), then some fighter levels, and then levels of something else...Was also looking at the abjurant champion. Campaign is starting at 5 and probably not advancing past level 10, so I need something that will be good "out of the box" so to speak.
I was also considering cleric 1/Fighter 4 with Quick Staff feat chain divine shield plus one-hand wielding the quarterstaff.

Unfortunately, psionics, Tomb of Battle, Magic of Inarcanum, and the Book of Nine Swords are not allowed.

Try to use a class that keys off of Wisdom, Int, or Cha.

Might I suggest an aged battle-cleric of Heironious, Cuthbert or some other martial deity of your choice? The physical stat hits are easily mitigated by your super awesome spells. The boost to Wis and Cha will help out a ton. Finally, there's a feat in Book of Exalted Deeds that lets you use WIS to hit with simple weapons (like your trusty Cudgel). For a thematic and appropriate character you might be able to slip it in.

Some additional options:

Duskblade - a high Int will help, and you'll be getting a lot of damage out of spells rather than strength.

Fighter - make use of the Combat Focus feat tree (PHBII?) that keys off of Wisdom.

Paladin - Go Charisma/Wisdom heavy. Pick up Divine Might to compensate for a lower Strength. Not incompatible with the Combat Focus feats.

Dragon Shaman?

Also: Consider one of the Feats that substitutes mental abilities for physical ones - Int bonus to reflex save, Wis bonus for ranged combat, that sort of thing.

Another way to go would be Swashbuckler 3 and then advance as a Paladin or Fighter (or Duskblade or Hexblade, even). Wear a Mithril Breastplate and get Combat Expertise.

Hmm... how about a Cleric 1 / Fighter 4 or Paladin 3 / Fighter 2 that uses a polearm? Use some of Mouseferatu's polearm feats.
