Need a good melee char-must be old!

A wildshaping druid can be quite effective in meele, and your str, dex, and con will get replaced by the stats of your creature, which will minimalize the aging effects. The wisdon bonus will help you get some extra buffing spells. The problem might be hp here since the online eratta has you keeping your own hp. If there's a way around that (like having enough points to up the con before the aging reduction, this might work.)

Swashbuckler/Duelist with high INT (and still descent Dex) comes in mind. Swashbuckler can add Int bonus to weapon damage, Duelist can add Int bonus to it's AC.

At the higher level, you can even give him some wizard level for Mage Armor and some melee enhancing spells. Abjurant Champion (Complete Mage) is also a good option, too.

If psionics and ToB are availible, a Swordsage/Psychic Warrior would be straight pimpin'.

Pump up your Wisdom and get AC bonus with the Swordsage and can use psionics to increase AC.

Deep Impact and Diamond Mind Manuevers will get you melee hits as touch attacks, which will counteract the 3/4 BAB. Psionic weapon and other Diamond Mind attacks would get you increased damage, making up for your low strength bonus.

Not a typical front-line bruiser, but a very effective character fighter-type.

Edit--Just saw that this is not allowed. It's still a nice build, though so I'll leave it up.

I am picturing Campbell from Braveheart (Wallace's friend's father) for your character. I like to envision the character first and then work out the stats to fit the image. IIRC, the penalties for aging are this, -1 str/dex/con, +1 int/wis/chr for middle aged, cumultive -2 str/dex/con, +1 int/wis/chr for old, and cumultive -3 str/dex/con, +1 int/wis/chr for venerable. I am pretty sure you would be in the middle aged category at 55-60 (but I can't remember for sure), so your stat penalties aren't huge (just make sure to put odd scores in those abilities).

To stat out the character, the obvious choice is to utilize the bonuses to your mental scores for combat and to get as many bonuses as possible to the physical stats for compensation. Keeping my interpretation of your character concept in mind the obvious class choices are fighter and barbarian. The Tome of Battle classes are extremely cool, however, I don't know if they necessarily fit the concept (unless you want to add in a religious/spritual element).

However, you can make a very effective character with just the fighter/barbarian combination. You can wear heavy armor while raging making your combat prowess extreme. Moreover, you can prestige into Champion of Gwnyver (I presume that by all core, you meant all WotC Greyhawk setting books as you already listed PHB and DMG). That class gives you a bunch of paladin bonuses and lets you rage in addition. You would get the low level cleric buff spells and could benefit from a good charisma score. You could specialize in sword/board fighting and really focus on shield abilities (some of the available feats accomplish what expertise does without being trumped by raging). IDHMBWM to recall about DR, but I remember this - just get yourself some adamentium armor ;).
