Need flying mount suggestions....

Pirate campaign, we are on a boat and at 8th level. I have a ranger, with no particular feats or skills thus far for training an animal or riding one. Need to get some feedback on how this is handled. I've seen that you can buy flying mounts, what about taming one? Nature check? Do I need to use that martial practice? Do you have to get a feat?

What are some good suggestions for flying mounts at 8th level? My DM thinks a flying mount should not be available till high paragon levels. Not disagreeing but would love to get some feedback from others who have used them. Thank you.

If you don't want to deal with the hassle of actual animals in the campaign, there's always spells (phantom steed is an 8th level ritual) and items (ebony fly from AV).

Adventurer's Vault also gives levels of mounts if you were to consider them treasure. I think hippogriffs are within reach of his level (a guess, don't have the book with me).

Ya, I did want an actual animal for he mount rather than a spell as it seems to go with the ranger-y goodness of it all. Just trying to convinve my DM this might be not overbalanced, but it's his call.

Not sure if its just as simple usually as pay for it like a horse, now you fly? or do i need to get special feats, both? Throw in a skill check or two? How did others handle exotic mounts? One of the things missing from this edition is the paladin special mount, what ever happened to that?

1st you need the Mounted Combat feat.

2nd you need to purchase a mount from the AV (Griffon, either Hippogriff)

3rd familiarize yourself with the mount rules in the DMG and the most recent Updates provided by WOTC

I need the combat feat? Just to fly it? Thought that was only required if I wanted to make use of any special abilities a mount provides it's rider who has that feat?

Without the feat any attacks you make or the mount makes are at -2. Plus no matter what you and the mount share 1 pool of actions.
