Need help coming up with weapon history ideas

I like the idea of the hammer having a specific task (like someone suggested, it's needed to destroy an evil artifact). To make it more interesting, you could give it limited intelligence and make it either driven or reluctant to complete that task.

I completely agree with the nature of the weapon foreshadowing future events. Not everything about the weapon has to be known up-front. I would say give just enough to intrigue, but leave enough open to allow avenues for future exploration and possible new adventure scenarios.

Also I tend to like many of the ideas suggested by Dross, Rechan, and Segrada.

The weapon might also be connected to other things, that is things other than itself. Other objects or events. Not necessarily earth shattering objects or events, but stuff that could provide future material for other campaigns. I have some ideas about that here.

What if it were the key to destroying an artifact? It was the hammer used to make it...and is the only way to unmake it.

It seems a bit weird to use a warhammer to make something else, in my eyes.

But perhaps it's made from some material left over from the artifact? Or on the same forge, before whoever ordered the construction of the artifact killed the maker so that he would not be able to undo it?

good point. maybe, after said artifact was created, the smith's hammer and other tools were used to create this greathammer?

Perhaps some race of giants used i to forge something? So the hammer would be maybe the right size for them to use to make something, but too big to be used as anything but a warhammer by normal PC races.
