This character obviously has a +4 BAB, since every level has a good BAB (either fighter or ranger).
If you calculate it in your fashion, each side has a +3 BAB, so you would lose one BAB.
Another (somewhat silly) example:
Mnk|Sor
Clr|Sor
Rog|Sor
This character would get a +1 BAB from your method.
From my method (and from the fractional calculation), the character would get a +2 BAB, since the classes don't matter at all, only what type of progression they have. Therefore Mnk/Clr/Rog (the better progression on each level) is three levels of moderate progression and thus the BAB of a 3rd-level cleric, or +2.
I've been here long enough to learn to trust your math and methods...
