Need San Francisco gaming info

The Games Workshop store is in a large, modern shopping area called the Metreon. The Metreon also has several movie theaters including an IMAX screen.

As others have mentioned, Gamescape (located at 333 Divisidero St.) is far and away the best overall game store in San Francisco. Gamescape is a "mom and pop" style store, with locations in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and San Rafael. They carry a very large selection of RPGs, board games, puzzles, and used games.

I haven't been to the one on Divisidero, but the one in Palo Alto is ok (I wouldn't call it anything better than ok). I live a little north of Palo Alto, on the Penninsula (the suburban area between San Jose and San Francisco), so I usually patronize Gator Games in San Mateo / Belmont. I really like them there; very congenial and very well stocked.

Probably the easiest way to get to Gamescape from Geary is to take the 38 bus that runs on Geary West bound. Get off at Divisidero and catch to 24 bus going south then get off at the Fell Street stop. Gamescape is on Divisidero between Fell and Page.

Don't be intimidated by the shrink wrapped books though, just ask the staff if you can open one up to look at it and they will let you. They also have a pretty big section of used gaming books along the back wall.

Have a great time in San Francisco!

I don't know about the employees at the SF Gamescape, but the ones in Palo Alto are very knowledgable, which is a huge plus. They all game themselves (quite a lot), and play a wide variety of games. It's always nice to be able to ask the employees the pros and cons of a system or module, and know there is a good chance they'll be able to give you an informed opinion of it... and they won't be afraid to tell you that something sucks.

The PA Gamescape isn't as big as the SF one (iirc, it's been a while since I've been the the SF one).

If you're staying in Union Square, you'd just hop on BART at the Powell St. station (underground right where the cable cars turn around). Be sure to get BART, & not Muni (which is only S.F. local). Ride the Richmond line to the first Berkeley stop (it's right after Ashby). Come up the escalator, cross the main intersection, & you're there. Cost about $6 roundtrip, & with the 10% discount on most items you can easily pay for the trip by... spending money to buy things! :p

Sounds not too bad, do they stock everything? d20, WW, Cthulhu, etc...

How big is the place? A hole in the wall, or a big place? Is it clean, or scuzzy?

Games of Berkeley is a large store. They stock more than just RPG's, including puzzles, card games, various toys, board games, chess sets, other stuff.

As for RPG's, they stock d20, WW, Hero, Wizkids and older Fasa, Games Workshop, and stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting. They also have a selection of minis, both Games Workshop, Reaper, Wotc's stuff and a small collection of less main stream, Confrontation, etc.

Edit again: GoB is clean and well lit.

Personally, I would pimp Endgame in Oakland, because I like them better, (they know me by name), but that is a more extensive trip. :)

I second (third? fourth?) Games of Berkeley. It's not my usual FLGS (I live a little too far out to go there too often) but it's where I'd go if I were in town. The BART ride is maybe a half hour. It is world-class, tons of RPGs, it looks like Gary Gygax vomited all over the place. If you have time, though, make a day of Berkeley, it's a lot of fun.

From Shattuck (where GoB is), you can walk up any of the side streets to Telegraph and go to Amoeba, the second best record store in this dimension (the best is Amoeba on Haight in SF, but don't ask me for directions from Union Square, SF ain't my hood). Go buy a tie-dye from one of the many smelly hippies out in front of Cody's Books (stop in and check out the Militant Right-wing Chicano Lesbian non-fiction selection), then walk up Durant to Top Dog for a butterflied hot italian or walk down the stairs below Tower Records to LaVal's Pizza. If you want the full Berkeley sideshow experience, any one of the many city-appointed freelance pharmacists, conveniently located EVERYWHERE on Telegraph, will be happy to provide you with whatever you need. Just follow their advice; they are licensed professionals, after all.

Sounds fun, but we're only there for two days, and Chinatown, Russian Hill, and the warf are at the top of the list (need to see where Big Trouble in Little China happened after all. :P). We'll have JUST enough time to day trip to Games of Berkley then race back to keep shopping/sight-seeing. But thanks for the 411.

city-appointed freelance pharmacists,

I love that description. :)
