As an added request, since I'm getting such good help form the emworld folks...

Where are some good places to eat/shop in San Fran, specifically in the
areas of Chinatown, Russian Hill, and the warf near that submarine (which
we are hoping to see). :)

I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with the 'tourist' parts of town (Fisherman's Wharf) or with Chinatown. I would suggest a clam chowder bread bowl from Boudin's at Pier 39 (it's cliche, but it's really a 'required' experience -- & they're pretty good, too). That'd be just a lunch thing, not a fancy meal at all. Be sure to get a truffle (or two, or three...) from Ghiradelli's (sp?) at Pier 39 or Ghiradelli Square.

San Francisco is fairly small, so I'll suggest a few other restaurants with which I'm familiar that are outside of the areas you mentioned in case you wish to spread out a bit.

Ti Cuz -- crepes place in the Mission, just 1 or 2 blocks from the 16th St. BART station. Very popular, so there would be a wait on weekends.

'The no name sushi place' (though I think they finally did get a name) -- 1 block from the Church St. Muni station. Take the right exit as you leave the station, you'll come up on Market St. facing Church St. Right on Church, staying on the same side of the street. Look for a small sushi place (might cross one intersection?) on your side, not the bigger one across the street.

New Delhi -- Indian food; have only been once because it's pricey (think it was $50 each?), but it was so good we were eating half bites to get just a little more taste of it. Going up Powell from the cable car stop at Market, take the 1st left & it'll be on the right about 2 blocks along.

Um... 'I forget the name' Thai place -- a bit harder to find, but pretty good (& if you haven't had Thai, you should try it; I recommend the chicken satay for an appetizer). From Castro St. Muni stop, go northeast on Market (away from the big hill). Take the 'soft' left at the 1st intersection (6-way, so you're crossing 1 street then left on the next); that puts you onto Noe heading north. Go up Noe a few blocks, looking for the restaurant on your right at the north side of its block.

For dessert, I recommend Sweet Inspirations, an easy walk from the sushi or Thai places. From the Thai place, head back down to Market, cross & go left down Market (again, away from the hill) to Sweet Inspirations on your right (about 1 block). From the sushi place, go back up to Market, hang a left(toward the hill), go a block & a bit & it'll be on your left.

OH! Le Mediterrane -- go like you're going to the Thai place, but as soon as you turn onto Noe from Market it'll be on your left (like 2 doors up or something). Also conveniently near... Sweet Inspirations! :p

I'll cast another vote for Gamescape on Divasdero. The shrinkwrap is annoying, but the store rules nonetheless. I make sure to go there whenever I'm in S.F. I was there last week and the selection was the best I've seen in quite a while, even though I have regular access to a number of great game stores here in Boston. I passed their store in San Rafael enroute to go hiking at Point Reyes but I didn't get a chance to stop in -- does anyone know how it matches up to the one in S.F.?

As for Games of Berkeley, I've been there a few times. They seemed like a great store when I first discovered them back in the summer of '98 but upon return visits in the next few years, it seemed that the selection had become much worse for RPGs, with the focus shifting pretty heavily to puzzles, board games, etc.. For that reason (and because I was able to talk my wife out of spending the day shopping in Berkeley :D), I haven't bothered making the trip across the bay on my last few visits to the area. But I see that it's getting a lot of good feedback here -- has the pendelum swung back or is it just that it's only me that thought their selection plummetted a few years back?

I've never heard of Endgame before. I'll have to check it out next time if I can remember it.
