Need some help/ideas for a 'Balrog' deck!

Asmo - I know the Pit Spawn is kinda lame. But I like using lame cards, and making them work, even if not optimally. I have my 'hell decks' (as in effective) if I ever need them again, but I generally prefer the pace to be a bit less brutal.

Well, in all fairness, I don´t think that Lord of the Pit is really that hot :)
For me he´s pretty much the King of casual Magic.

Where does it say that Fire Whip deals combat damage?

I recall a FAQ a long time back stating that if you tapped the creature enchanted by fire whip to deal damage during your combat phase (you can declare a null combat by announcing that you are entering your combat phase, but not attacking with any of your creatures), the damage it dealt is treated as combat damage because well, it dealt damage during combat, and all related abilities trigger accordingly.

The example revolved around flowstone salamader (a card from stronghold), but the precedent it sets applies equally to all other relevant cards. However, I must admit that this took place a long time ago (~1998, so I am not sure if this stand has been reversed or made irrelevant by rule revisions).:)

Yeah, that's true. I guess I meant to say that the Pit Spawn is really even worse. :) I know you don't (well, you never did) tend to see LotP in tourneys. A hilarious thought, but. . . no.

Heh, mind you. Some guy won worlds packing Spirit of the frickin' Night. ;)

I've looked through the goblins... You may like these guys:

The Festering Goblin is a solid creature that can take down bigger creatures or two X/1 critters.
The Goblin Skycutter is a nice way to kill annoying fliers, if they pester you too much.
The Kill-Suit Cultist is plain funny.
The Prickly Boggart can start early with hurting your opponent, though I think you want to do the big damage with the Balrog! ;)
Rustrazor Butcher - this guy is also somewhat nasty - with the first strike, he survives 2/X creatures, because he shrinks them before they deal damage!
The Goblin Sledder can help you to feed superflous goblins into your Balrog, once he starts attacking!

Cheers, LT.

Red/Black, huh?

Caveat: I haven't played competitively or bought cards since 6th Ed or so, so my info may be out of date.

I like the LotP with Fire Whip as a theme. I'd add some Fallen Angels or Sengir Vampires to add some lower (than the LotP) cost punch.

Use Unearth (1B sorc) and Phyrexian Reclamation (1B ench)- both bring back target creatures from the graveyard, Unearth requires the critter be 3M or less total cost, Reclamation requires an additional cost in mana and life.

To boost your mana curve, Dark Ritual was always the standard, but if that's not available, consider Burnt Offering (which gives you R AND B mana) and Priest of Gix.

If you can do that, choose your other red & black critters for their low cost (less than 3 total mana) and higher than normal impact, especially with effects that occur when the critter comes into or leaves play.

Goblins and Kobolds are fine from the Red side.

From black, consider Hidden Horror, Junun Efreet, Skittering Skirge, Spined Fluke, Dauthi Marauder, Phyrexian Ghoul, Phyrexian Broodlings, Priest of Gix, and Bone Shredder.

Bone Shredder can turn into a creature sweeper when summoned, sacrificed, then brought back via Unearth or Phyrexian Reclamation.

OTOH, you could use Mogg infestation in conjunction with any of this:

Mogg infestation
Destroy all creatures target player controls. For each creature put into a graveyard in this way, put two 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens into play under that player's control.

Used on your opponent, its a creature sweeper that clears the way for your bigger critters- esp. fliers. In combination with Breeding Pit or Kobolds, its a medium cost combo that instantly doubles the number of critters you control, makes them 1/1 and changes their type. Followed by something like a Phyrexian Ghoul, Phyrexian Broodling, or Fallen Angel, and they have PLENTY of food.

And for giggles? If you go that route, you might as well play Phyrexian Dreadnought, Renegade Warlord and/or Keldon Warlord.

I'm not sure if there's just a whole lot of LotP love around here (and hey, I like them too) or if people haven't quite parsed a particular card name properly, or if (more likely) they've never heard of the poor old, unappreciated, overcosted Pit Spawn. No, it doesn't look like a Balrog. Oh well. Here's the 'combo' in all its glory :D :

Tha Removar!1!

Ahem, anyway. . . thanks for all the other suggestions*. ;) Duly noted, and filed away with the others, so that I might, if I'm lucky, get a deck together one millennium. :)

* And let it be officially known that no superior card is going to usurp the noble Pit Spawn's righful place! Grr.

I remember the Pit Spawn, but I felt the whole creature sacrifice mechanism of the LotP fit well with the image of the Balrog simply sweeping its way through its massed "minions," heedless of their well-being.
