Need Suggestion For Cohort

My Fire Genasi Cleric of Vulcan (the Roman God http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcan_(god)), who herself is a craftswoman of great skill, has lost her cohort (a large construct that her father had built). I'm looking to go another direction with a cohort, and having a difficult time coming up with some decent concepts. I would like to emphasis her racial background over her crafting this time around. Her fire genasi traits have been in her family for many generations - they consider themselves blessed by Vulcan. Also, my character does love using fire spells -so a fiery cohort would be great. The only disclaimer I would put on concepts is that my DM really dislikes flying characters so I would like to stay away from flight.

If anyone could help with a concept it would greatly appreciate it.

The concept should be around 10th/11th level equivalent. Also, my character is Neutral in alignment - so something close to this alignment would be the best (another alignment would probably mean reducing the level equivalent - but I wouldn't mind hearing these ideas too, they would just have to be of a lower level - 9ish?)

An azer with class levels would seem perfectly in-line with the character. Fiery and crafts focused.

Possibly as a bodyguard type? Heavy armor and a big hammer, or the like.

I like the Azer idea. Let's add on Dwarf Paragon and then go into Fighter for two levels.

Azer: 2 hd, LA +4 = level 6
Dwarf Paragon 3
Fighter 2
-------
Level 11

HD: 2d8 + 5d10
BAB: +7/+2
Ability Adjustments (includes Dwarf Paragon): +2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +4 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, +2 Wisdom, -2 Charisma.

Immune to Fire, SR 18, +6 natural armor bonus

And the most important part: all classes and hit die have Craft as a class skill, and your Dwarf Paragon levels give you an additional +3 to all Craft checks relating to stone or metal.

Cheers, -- N

PS: Note that the Azer does not technically qualify for Dwarf Paragon... but it's got the right flavor for the race and for your cohort, I think. :)

An azer seems appropriate.

Alternately you could go for a mythic sort of feel and forge yourself a minion from living flame. This could be an elemental that looks like a construct forged from plates of fire, or a mix of construct and fire types.

I was going to suggest a mechanical owl like Vulcan forged for athena, but your GM doesn't like flight so nevermind. Perhaps a mechanical mount? Vulcan is gimpy afterall.

Assuming the DM allows the class I always recomend an artificer as a cohort. Nothing like having cut-rate items on hand. Also sounds like it would fit the character as well.

A flamebrother Salamander would work as well as far as the crafting bit goes.

4 extraplanar HD
+4 LA
3 levels of Fighter.

HD: 4d8+3d10
BAB: +7/+2
Base Fort/Ref/Will: 7/4/4

Alternatively, you can have a grappling Salamander, since they do get Constrict, with the Reaping Mauler PrC

4 Extraplanar HD
+4 LA
Fighter 1
Reaping Mauler 2

Takes advantage of the Salamander's Constrict and Heat abilities.
