Jewel of the North, formerly know as vincegetorix
I promised my players I would write about their campaign on this forum so they can keep track of their progression. I tend to improvise a lot and go for a more Heart Fantasy feeling in my game. If anybody would like to comment or add something, feel free to do it, I'm sure my players will like having the support from a D&D community.
So, lets start
The starting party is:
- Erza No-Home, Human Wu Jen. Young pupil of the Rockseeker brothers since she's been on the run from her family of corrupted nobles from Fallcrest.
- Kerdak of Pelor, Half-Orc cleric of Pelor. Recruited from the All-Faith Shrine in Fallcrest to help the brothers dealing with the things haunting the lost mine.
- Belamy Pimdom, Halfling GOO warlock. Dungeon delver working for a Morkoth, the mad octopi-like collectors from the Far Realms. Trade strange trinket in exchange from other items granting him powers.
- Darius Naaraja, Tiefling Battlemaster. Elderly soldier from Fallcrest who used to work as engineer and warsmith for an expeditionary corp in orc-land. Now travels the Vale in search of his grand-daughter, Vanifer, who went missing a year ago.
Chapter 1: Ambush
The party received a letter from their old friend and patron Gundren Rockseeker to take possession of a cart full of mining equipement at the Five League House and take it to the Leonin Shield in Phandalin, a small mining town at the foot the Dawnforge Mountain, near the Harkenwold. Gundren and a friend are suposed to meet them on the way.
Two days into the journey, the party spots smoke around a bend in the road. Darius and Belamy decide to skip across the wood while the rest make the long way around with the cart. Two goblins try to ambush Darius and Belamy but failed their stealth approche and are quickly dispatched: a huge clawed hand covered in green-flammes burst from the ground claiming one dead goblin while the other fled. Meanwhile, the Kerdak and Ezra reach a raided caravan. Investigating it, they spot many small prints (goblins!) under the fallen cart and notice the symbol of the three brothers: a closed chest with three helms over it. They quickly understand that the goblin must have seized Gundren and his friend. The two others join them just in time to be (sucessfuly this time) surprised by three goblins led by the one who escaped the first botched ambush. Combat erupt. The party has a hard time fighting the small creatures hiding in the bushes and Belamy is shot down while figthing from the top of the crates pile. He's quickly healed by Kerdak. The rest of the party finally seizes the upper hand and turn the tide of the battle. Two goblins are taken by the clawed hand, while the last goblin (the one who escape the first ambush with Darius and Belamy) faces the rest of the party. Against all odds, he stand two whole rounds against them, take Kerdak to death's door then flees.
Darius chases him (I used the Chase rules from the DMG) in the woods until they both emerge in a clearing with lots of crates and chests from previous raid. They fight for 3 rounds, both of them unable to finish the other. Then, in a moment of silence, the unkillable goblin throws his dagger then run away, rolling a nat 20 of his hiding attempt. Meanwhile, Belamy and Erza spot goblins track going into the woods while Kerdak tell them the tale of how Magglubyet, the Goblin Lord, Exarch of Bane is the one claiming the souls of fallen goblinoids to force them to fight on his side in the eternal war between Bane and Grummsh.
The party gathers and venture forth into the wood, following the goblin's trail and barely escaping devious traps.
They find the cave used by the creatures to raid the nearby road and decide to enter the cave. They first enter a room where they find the pen for the giant bats used by the goblins with a huge beehive stuck to the ceiling. Since they are asleep, they decide to let them. Then, they spot a small tunnel filled with a mount to rock. Erza climbs first and go a little further in the tunnel while Belamy swiftly climbs behind her and follows. Even after the fourth time I told them that the pile looks unstable under the weight of a 16 years petite women and a halfling, the 6'5'' half-orc in chainmail decides to climb, making the mountain of loose stones falls on him and Darius, returning him to death's door while Darius expertly avoided the rocks.
The session ends after Belamy, tumbling down the rest of the pile of rocks, stabilize Kerdak while Darius and Erza try to free him from under the rubbles.
