It's an extremely addictive game. I play it occassionally... my gf got me into it as well. I'll admit the idea of taking advantage of stuff in the world and making money off of it gives me a bit of a thrill 
.
But anyway, a lot of people take the game waaaaay too seriously, and I know if I were a parent I would be strongly monitoring my kids' usage of the site. Like I said, it can be quite addicting.
Additionally, I'm not impressed with the company as of late, as they seem to be really straining with the popularity of their site. They're taking forever to release things that are in development. In general they cater to the richest "neopians" and the people who do the battledome thing the most. The servers have gotten better, but for a while they were pretty slow. And in general based on interviews I've read, they just don't have a professional attitude. Which is great when you're running a small site, but when you're running a business there needs to be some professionalism. They just seem to be along on the ride.
And, you have to ask yourself about what signals it sends when you adopt pets and have them fight each other...
