New 3.5 Base Classes-The Return

Brawler/Pugilist

An unarmed fighter with a western flair. Less finesse oriented than the monk, maybe borrowing some from the barbarian

You could play a Fighter with the Improved Unarmed Strike feat.

1. Class name: Swashbuckler. Role: The Smooth Fighter.

You can do this with a Fighter/Rogue multiclass.

2. Class name: Commander. Role: The Leader.

You could take one level of Bard and advance as Fighter, putting all Skill Points into Diplomacy and keeping that skill just as high as any other class.

3. Class name: Mystic. Role: the Witch.

Buy the Psi Handbook. ;) This "divine spontaneous caster" sounds like a good idea.

1) You would have horrible damage and no class abilities that show off that form of unarmed combat.

2) Its not the same, something more akin to the Duelist is needed.

3) This will require a lot of skill points and you dillute the class with the bard level. You also need the class abilities to capture the flavor.

4) How does the PsiHB fulfill a divine spontaneous caster?

Especially since none of the Spoiler Posters with advanced copies of the PHB mentioned it...

I suspect that the new base class will be an NPC class. But we'll all just have to wait a month and see then, eh?

He's talking about the new base classes alluded to in the Miniature's handbook and the Complete Warrior, not the new PHB.

Soe of these already exist

2. Class name: Commander. Role: The Leader.

I'm thinking the Noble class, which is a fighting/leader class from Wheel of Time/Star Wars rpg, would work here, though it may be a little on the weak side. Something like that, but with some added abilities to keep it useful compared to the bard.
I love having more choices for classes. I'm working on a campaign that creates the opportunity for many cultures to meet and interact. I'm pulling classes from OA, Nyambe, Green Ronin's master class series (so far, only the Avatar), and Arcana Unearthed when it comes out.

In Dragon 308 the fighter can now choose Improved Grapple, Deflect Arrows, Snatch Arrows, and Stunning Fist as bonus feats, with Improved Unarmed strike as a prerequisite. So there is some new advantages to taking Improved Unarmed strike as a fighter, but the damage would still suck.

There will also be a noble base PC class for a straight DnD system, in the Dragonlance Campaign Guide.

i don't like the idea of a "Commander" base class. the ability to lead masses of troops into combat should be earned, not handed out to newbie 1st level characters.

this concept works much better as a prestige class IMO.
