New 4E ad causing problems

Fair warning. I will be placing code in EN2 that will inspect the page and refuse to display it if ad blockers are in use - the page will also fail to display if Javascript is disabled.

Viewing the page without the ads is, in my view, stealing.
I hope it doesn't mean that I have to instal a flash player to see ENworld. I also use often public computers and have no chance to instal it on them.

But I see the static add at the moment. Will this suffice?

Idon't mind adds, but I mind forcing me to install programms that opens up my pc to more viruses and not being able to log in on the move, using public PCs.

Some sections of EN2 use flash - there's a difference between an object not instatiating and being removed forcibly by an ad blocker. I can't detect if the player isn't running - I can detect if the load was blocked are react appropriately.

It's late, I'm tired and grumpy - and the tone perceived in one poster's messages rubbed me the wrong way. I'll need to weigh things in before actually writing something like that - and ultimately it is not my decision alone to make.

I don't know. It's not THAT bad, even on my grummy work computer. I wished they would have something else to advertice since two adds that are basically the same next to eachother are a bit boring, but that's not your decision I imagine. What bugs me more is that the news block has disappeared from the Forum frontpage...

Catch 22, eh? No matter what you do somebody will be upset. :)

Given that I've had Pathfinder fans email me to say they're leaving because I moved their forum UP in the forum list, I think my best strategy is to just do what works for me and hope somebody agrees. :)

True enough. Have there ever been any Paizo ads run on EN World? Sooner or later it has to come down to what pays the bills.

I will add my voice to the chorus that says the ad is very annoying (even on my 17" widescreen monitor), but I will also say that I understand why ads are a necessary evil. It's definitely incentive to become a Community Supporter again and maybe that's the best thing that can come from this.

Is it normal that community supporters also get that ad? I do understand the why of the ad. Just checking if it's normal for it to display for me.

Well, Being at least one person who was complaining about the Pathfinder forum moving up, (I never said I was leaving though.) I'll chime in that I was happy to see the ad. I didn't think it was that annoying and good to see WOTC giving russ some money.

I wish the posts would wrap around it, but having written PHP code, and played with forum source, I know better to ask for anything that I wouldn't be willing to take on myself.

I am a Community Supporter and I won't be turning off the ads.

So basically, hang in there Russ, we might get grumpy but things will pull through.

the offensive person was probably me. i didnt mean to offend. my tone was probably over the top, i had a long few days and that ad pricked the pussy sore of my weekend, i vented more in the post than the ad deserved (though the thing was annoying as hell). sorry about the tone. like i said in the other post in the other thread though, do what you have to do. either the futue ads wont bug me, or they will and if i cant find a workaround to your workaround to adblocker, i just wont come here as much. i understand the need of the site to make money though, so do what you gotta do. nothing personal, just business, as they say in the godfather. though if i wake up with a horse's head in my bed, i will know who did it. :)
