Well, if you're going to play a Ranger/Wizard I'd suggest either Moon or Sun Elf for race... I'd probably choose Moon Elf, since the +2 to Dex helps both the Ranger and the Wizard.

As for stats... well, you'll need a good Dexterity to start with, since your character probably won't be wearing a lot of armour. A good Intelligence is probably as high on the list, as it's necessary for casting Wizard spells. An above-average Wisdom is also good for the Ranger's duties, like tracking and the Ranger's spells. Other than that, it's depends very much on what you want to play. Strength's good if you want to be involved in a lot of close-combat, and a good Constitution, despite your elven penalty, is a great assett too. If there's a dump stat for your character, it's probably Charisma, so no need to put too many points there.

If you want to plan on what to get out of your character in the future, I'd suggest asking your DM about the Arcane Archer, and concentrating on the ranged attack feats, like Point-Blank Shot.

Hope that helped. :)

Also, since it's your 1st game, do you really need to multiclass? You might want to go for either Ranger or Wizard first, trying to learn the game.

If you insist on having both combat and arcane power, you might opt for Bard instead.

If you want to be a Bowuser, you could be an elven wizard, with proficiency with bows built into the race and the +2 dex really helping on the archery as well as armor.

thanks

thanks i could be wrong in thinking but most people start with AC 12 (10+average dex 2) if i cast mage armor and shield as wizard it would be 23 then cast bulls strength plus cats grace for more buffs i thaught i could be able to hold my own in combat ( helping hp with the d10 from ranger)
does this theory sound fair?

Shield only lasts a few minutes, so you have to cast it at the start of combat. Also, with the revision coming in in a few weeks, that also counts for buff spells (Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace, etc) with Shield taken down to +4. Ranger hit points will drop to d8.

If you want fight and magic, be a Bard. Their spells are a little more deversatile than that of the Wizard and Sorceror, though they get less of them, but they can cast spells while wearing chain armor, which gives +4 armor. They're also better in attacking than mages are, though not as good as rangers. If you consider that you only get the ranger's HP and To Hit half the time and the wizard's the other half, then it might actually balance out.
