New Core Class: The Priest

Jarval

Explorer
The priest is basically a non-martial version of the cleric. They lose proficiency with armour and have a d4 for hit points in exchange for a larger number of spells per day. That's all I've got at the moment, but I'd like to have something a little more unique. Any ideas for other abilities?

PRIEST

As the PHB description of the cleric, with the following changes.

Hit Die: d4.

Skill Points: 4 + Int modifier each level.

Armor and Weapon Proficiency: Priests are proficient with all simple weapons. They are not proficient with any type of armor, nor with shields.

(Edit: Sorry the formating is a bit off. IIRC, you can't make tables with vB code, and HTML is still switched off.)

(Edit: Droped good Fort save. Changed Skill Points to 4 per level.)

Maybe this is better called a "cleric variant"? Or a replacement?

I'd say give the class an extra domain or nifty power if you take away the good fort save.

Later!

How about giving them a list of leveled ceremonies that they can perform in addition to their spells. I believe Unearthed Arcana had a list of them that might get you started.

Check out the recent thread on non-spell casting priests for ideas for new "nifty" powers.

There were some really neat ideas by guys other than me.

bensei: Thanks for the link to the Umbragia .pdf. Interesting class, if a little different to what I'm working on (most notably, my class doesn't have spontaneous casting).

Crothian: Good point, I'll make that change.

Cloudgatherer: I was thinking of it being a variant rather than a replacement. The cleric works fine for some deities, but I wanted something more scholarly as well. The extra domain is a possibility, and I'll try to come up with some nifty powers.

Geoff: I've not seen hong's version. Do you have a link to it, or a copy you could send me?

thalmin: Sounds like a good idea, but I don't have Unearthed Arcana. I'll take a look at it next time I'm in my FLGS.

trentonjoe: I'll take a look at that thread. I missed it first time round, so thanks for the pointer :)

I've dropped the good Fort save from the class, and given it 4 Skill Points per level. Does this class look balance with the Cleric, or is it (as I suspect) a little underpowered?
